svchost.exe? 206mb memory

On my process list is svchost.exe, I know that is normal. But I have never seen it use over 200,000K. There usually no more than a few mb at most.

-It’s dropped to 50ish now

What matters is not the svchost.exe nor the amount of memory that it is using, but what processes is in itself using svchost as that is the thing you need to see. For instance windows update uses svchost.exe (as do a myriad of other processes as that is its job) so it could use lots of memory.

Memory will drop as the processes/services won’t be in use all the time so it will drop, see image of one of mine and you can get an idea lots of services use svchost, 27 in this instance, but the memory is minimal only about 29MB.

This isn’t easy, but there are tools:
Check out SVCHost Process Analyser, http://www.neuber.com/free/svchost-analyzer/index.html. Each occurrence of svchost.exe in task manager is assigned an ID number and it is this ID number that you need to check in the tool.

Ahh I see… No doubt it was microsoft updates (most likely :P) But I have never seen it that high before and it was making me lag

Well there is no way I would make that assumption as there are very many applications/services that will legitimately use svchost and some that aren’t legit. Considering windows updates use of svchost would normally be in the area of patch Tuesday (2nd Tue of the month), when memory usage is more likely to be higher.

So without tools, you can’t make that kind of assumption, didn’t I say this wasn’t easy ;D

I did scan with SvchostAnalyzer and get this.
