Can someone please help. I’m a novice to posting! We’ve run avast home on our amin computer and laptop for few years now no prob, but laptop has developed a problem. It runs windows XP and has started to come up with following message when trying to connect to internet:
svchost.exe - Application Error
The instruction at “0x75606eb5” referenced memory at “0x00000008”. The memory could not be “read”.
Click OK to terminate program.
It won’t make wireless connection to internet.
When I do avast scan it doesn’t find any viruses but says:
Disk C:Boot Record Unable to scan: No more detail available
Disk D: Boot Record Unable to scan: No more detail available
Can anyone please help cos my husband is going mad at me!!
I’m no expert at these, not by a long shot, but it looks like you may have a particularly tenacious bit of malware called a rootkit. This will likely take a bit of getting rid of.
Do you have any other security applications installed on the computer?
Can you try and schedule a boot time scan with Avast?
Ignore above message I’ve now performed a boot scan and it found a system32 file infected by Win32:Fasec (Trj). I moved it to chest then noticed another option was to repair. Should I have clicked to repair instead of moving to chest? If so, can I retrieve it from chest and try to repair or is that like opening a big can of worms?
Hi scythe944. thanks for reply. I’m now getting a windows message saying "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close, and I’m also unable to get an internet connection on that laptop. Any suggestions how to fix this?
First of all, are you “clear” of any viruses now? It sounds like avast found one and quarantined it, and that was it.
If you don’t have anymore viruses, I did a search on google for, “Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close” and found quite a bit of info.
I think It’s clear of viruses now but it usually uses a wireless connection to internet and nothing is happening when I press button to connect . so can’t get onto internet to download the hijack stuff. Can access internet off another computer but then software would scan that one wouldn’t it? Is there a way to download software on another computer and then copy across to laptop that has the problem?
Download hijackthis, then copy the setup program to a flash drive, CD, or whatever, then copy it to the computer that doesn’t have an internet connection, and run the file to install.
Sometimes One can “reset” the internet connection; however, to attempt
that you need to tell us the SPECIFIC Name of the Operating System
( for example : Win XP SP2, Win XP SP3, Vista Home, etc ) ? Does the
computer that currently unable to connect to the internet use a “router” ?
I’ve downloaded Hijack this on working computer and copied onto flash drive. I’m running a thorough scan again on laptop to see if it comes up with anything else then I’ll run the hijack this on it and let you know what happens.
Thanks again for your help. I’d be completely lost without you!!
Hi Spirit songs. The laptop runs Windows XP. I think it’s SP3 and yes it does connect to the internet via a router. Any help gratefully received. Thanks.
Hey scythe944. I ran the thorough scan. It still says the same message re Disk C & D: Boot record unable to scan so there is obviously still something going on. I’ve run the hijack this and am now going to attempt to paste the log… wish me luck!!
