switch off

Hi,
generally happy with the programme, but:

  1. twice today avast has switched itself off and told me i am unprotected, what is happening?? (Second time was during a quick scan and yes it is password protected.)

  2. how to stop the annoying and un relevant “news” pop ups please?

Running Vista (updated fully) on Toshiba Equium A200 series.

Thanks for any help.

Re 1. - Have (or did) you another Anti-Virus installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

  • What other security software do you have installed (firewall, anti-spyware, etc.) ?

Re 2. - The popup is actually meant to be the auto update notification (check your avastUI > Settings > Update and you will see that an auto update has just taken place. It appears that these tips/ad popups are piggybacked onto the auto update notification popup and this looks like it messes up the display and sound for the auto update notifications.

If you browse the forums you will see several topics relating to a known bug about updates.

  1. no auto update notification popup (commonly displays an avast! tip - FB Privacy, etc. instead).
  2. no audio voice over for the auto update.
  3. the popup delay timings don’t appear to work either.
These tips popups have in the past been piggybacked with the auto update update notification, so the only way to get rid of them would be to disable the auto update notification, which if you want the update notification (when it works correctly) would remove everything.

Hi DavidR, thanks for the response.

looks like i will have to cope with the tip update at least for now.

I removed malwarebytes perhaps 4-6 months ago. I still have spybot S&D which i run perhaps once a month.

I also have Adaware AV which again i may run monthly. Finally i have Advanced systemcare 6 which i run about every 10 days. I do not have any of them running except when i want to run a scan, they are all prevented from loading on startup except avast.

Happy to ditch Adaware if suggested and i never use the malware scan from Advanced systemcare6.

Thanks.

I suspect that this is all down to security conflict.

Having two resident AVs isn’t advised, even if you disable one the low level drivers are still likely to be loaded and it is these that could come into conflict.

AdAware AV as far as I’m aware is resident, so should really be uninstalled. I would also suggest you uninstall Advanced systemcare 6, I’m not sure of it resident status, etc. but, I’m ware of these tweakers. It is from IOBIT just search the forums or google for IOBIT and Malware Bytes and you will get the picture.

I would also suggest removing S&D and replace it with MalwareBytes, it is I believe better than S&D and works fine with avast.

Didn’t Avast deal with this in V7 where you can install Avast AV on top of another AV running. I cant remember what it was called but did they decide against the feature?

Hi,

I dont have a problem with ditching everything else as long as i have one anti-malware alongside Avast. The only reason i have advanced systemcare is because my laptop is well past needing to be replaced but is outside affordability at the moment and i have to nurse it along as best i can to keep it running. (I have to defrag it at least once daily) and i use ccleaner daily also. regretably, it cant be upgraded as it will handle only 2gb memory as its max :frowning:

I have been running the system as is for at least 4 years and never had a problem previously, but i will try as you suggest and finish with a boot scan for good measure; thanks for your time.

I can’t remember about v7.0 i do remember that once avast v5.0 was installed you could install Ad-Aware.
Read this about having two resident anti-viruses at the same time.

It was compatibility mode install if I remember correctly, not sure if it was in avast 8 (rather than avast 7) for a short time, but it isn’t avast 2014 as far as I’m aware.

Back in the days of avast 5 AdAware was an anti-ad/spyware not an AV like it is now.

Did you play with this in V7? I wanted to but couldn’t play on my machine at the time…other things happening.

I thought it was a great idea; if it could work properly.
