System files in vault

Hi,

All that’s ever been in my chest are 3 system files:
kernel32.dll
winsock.dll
wsock32.dll

I understand that it’s standard operating procedure for avast to put them in the chest for backup/restore purposes right from the start, so I’m not concerned about that.

There’s 2 copies of each in the chest, all the same date (8-29-02) but 1 of each is exactly an hour later than the other (07:00:00 and 08:00:00 for each one).

Can I safely delete the earlier one of each? Or should I hang on to them all?

Thanks and best,
Mike

Avast puts additional copies of system files to the chest,if the files in the chest differ from the actual files in the system folder. You can delete the older copies if you want.

Can I just come in on this topic with a related question? I
do not have these files at all in my chest. I think I might have deleted them by mistake some time ago, not realising what they were. Should I get them back in there and if so - how?
thanks

Sorry, I have realised that they are all there - I wasnt looking at “all files”, so ignore the above message.
thanks

Thanks, vojtech, that’s more or less what I’d guessed, but nice to have it “officially” confirmed of course.

I’d assumed that multiple copies was to give you the equivalent of a choice of restore-points – but only an hour apart was what threw me.

(Edit) Just deleted them, and I was a little surprised I was never asked to confirm that’s what I wanted to do. Since asking for confirmation has almost always been a “standard” Win procedure when file-deletion’s involved, maybe it should be considered for future versions?

Mike, your system files changed…
Have you updated your OS recently?

Hi Technical,

Just standard Win Updates – and to the best of my memory (such as it is), just the critical ones. I just thought it odd that the two versions of each file were exactly an hour apart, right down to the second.

Have you changed your system for DST (daylight savings time)?
Does your system is set to do it automatically?
One hour apart seems to be this…

Here, we pass from DST to normal time a kind of weeks ago but I did not notice that avast! put system files at Chest for the second time… :-\

Interesting point I hadn’t thought of – that certainly would account for exactly an hour, wouldn’t it? Yes, I’m set to automatically switch back and forth – typically Win does that on the first reboot after the scheduled change, which here is April to Daylight Time and Oct. back to Standard.

And without (so far) any virus warnings, there’s been no real reason to look in the chest other than occasional curiosity, so I haven’t a clue when the extra copies were put there. They’re gone now, anyway – and I’ll try to keep an eye open there next month when we go onto Daylight, to see if I get new ones again.
