system lock-down for a rookie

I run windows xp h/e and recently downloaded avast h/e 4.6. I switched from Norton a/v at the recommendation from a friend. I would occassionally get a warning about having a virus and would usually delete them and think nothing of it. After reading some of the forum topics, it seems like this is the wrong thing to do. Lesson learned.

So yesterday, I turned on my computer and immediately got virus warnings. I clicked on the ‘move to chest’ button and nothing happened. My computer just froze. I couldn’t restart or open any apps. I turned off the computer, re-booted, and got the same result. It didn’t matter what I clicked on, my computer was on lock-down.

Has anyone else had this happen to them? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi tbone,

First question to you. Are you using a firewall on your machine, if not you are in danger, and your computer is catching malware even faster than you can clean them out. If you cannot come up with what the virus warning specifically said in exact terms, we cannot do more for you as speculate as what is your problem. If MBR see this thread for some clues: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=13771.0. But before considering this, try to find out more about the sort of virus that has hit your computer and prevents it from freezing. Also important in this respect. What is your OS?

Hi Polonus. Thanks for the reply.

I currently run windows xp and have zone alarm as a firewall. Unfornately, I don’t have the virus name(s) at this time. After reading some other posts, I was thinking of rebooting in safe mode and trying a scan, or restoring the computer. Any thoughts?

It won’t harm in any way. You can also try boot time scanning.
Can’t you scan your system with antispywares and antitrojans applications?

I was able to schedule a boot time scan before the my computer froze up again. I rebooted and was able to move several viruses. So, after almost an hour, my computer seems fine. I’ll keep my fingers crossed.
