System Restore and AVAST

Hi Avast Team, I just wanna ask if when you do a system restore, will your avast “settings” on that system restore point will take place? and replacing your current avast setting? Thanks in advance.

Even if it does, you can always change them…

hmmm, but when you do the system restore, the setting of your avast on that restore point will take place?

When doing a system restore it is advisable to disable the avast self-defence module (avastUI > Settings > Troubleshooting), as it will try to protect avast and can result in corruption of avast.

In theory going back using system restore should have the settings at that point - however system restore id notorious for not covering everything, all files. It isn’t a a backup application.

Essentially you should export your avast settings and import them again after any system restore - avastUI > Settings > General, scroll down - Back up settings and Restore settings option.

If there is enough disk space for the restore points (check the disk space set to restore points that is always less the available real free disk), I would uninstall Avast and only after that trying to restore the system. Even disabling Avast self-defense module, system restore could fail. The users must understand that this operation (restore a system point and changing antivirus files) is the same of a lot of malware operations.

I’ve never had a problem with system restore (creation and restoration) provided the Avast self-defense mode was turned off when
the restore point was created and, that some scenario holds true for restoring a restore point. The Avast self-defense module must be turned off
prior to either function.

I understand disabling when restoring. But it’s hard to accept when creating. That will mean that any restore point automatic created by Windows won’t work or, worse, that you should disable Avast self defense modulo all the time to get system restore working as it should, i.e., automatically.

I don’t see why the self-defence needs to be off to create a restore point as it isn’t trying to remove and elements of avast, just create copies as required for the restore point.

I also wonder how avast does its own restore point creation on major changes, etc.

Personally I gave up on system restore over 10 years ago and went over to weekly hard disk imaging and that never required me to disable anything for it to do its job.

Since you no longer use it, it’s kind of hard to comment on it. :)(I also don’t create a full image backup just to try out a utility.)
It takes time to create a restore point. Any time that I’ve forgotten and left the self protection module active,
the time spent to create a restore point when updating to a new version of Avast has been non existent.
When self defense is turned off, the time spent to create the restore point is normal.
A restore point when needed needs to be something you can count on. I therefore turn off the self defense mode
whenever I need the restore point function.
Your computer, your choice. I know this has worked for me and prevented problems with that function that were evident
when the self defense mode was left on.

Hi, I did the system restore w/o turning off avast, then after system restore the avast shows a message it says that system restore failed because avast protects ur system changes . . . . Then i turned off avast, then i did the system restore again, it became successful. I wanna ask is there a moment that your avast can become corrupted? ??? thanks

Corruption can happen if something is changed when others aren’t (if those elements happen to be protected) this can cause not so much corruption (though this is possible) as a mismatch between elements.

Corruption can occur for reasons other than using System Restore, like a power spike or power failure, resulting in a corrupt file that was in use at the time.

Avast acted weirdly after every system restore I did, necessitating me to restart the computer again for it to go back to normal (though not before sticking their shortcut icon on the desktop which I promptly delete every time).
Nonetheless aside from that the system restore seems to have worked fine otherwise.
Is there anything to be concerned about that something else in the system restore didn’t go well (or became corrupted) because of Avast interfering with it (on account of the defense module being on as discussed above) even though I see no evidence of that?

Not really advisable to breath life into a very old topic, where program versions will have changed greatly also.

When this was created there was an issue with system restore and the avast self-defence module had to be disabled. This now shouldn’t be the case, so you should create your own new topic if you have a problem with system restore.
