Does the new version 2016.11.1.2241 fix the problem where System Restore didn’t work properly unless the self defence function is disabled?
(Avast free that is)

As far as I’m aware it is certainly more tolerant of system restore. That said I would still suggest disabling the self-defence module, mainly because if it doesn’t work completely or without issues, then you are going to have to do it again anyway.
Personally I have had system restore disabled for as long as I can remember (certainly as long as I have had avast over eleven years). It isn’t a backup as such as it doesn’t cover 100% of what is on your system.
I would suggest investigating hard drive imaging software as that makes an exact copy of your Partition or Hard Drive.
Besides what it is said before, I strongly suggest the use of http://www.toms-world.org/blog/restore_point_creator
Within this program you can (easily) restore a system restore point in Safe Mode.

Thanks for your replies. I’ve very rarely had to use system restore, so I don’t know if I have this problem. I only picked up on it from reading a Win7 usenet posting. Of course finding that I need to restore after a program update/install that hasn’t worked (inc. Microsoft updates) would be a bad time to find out that it doesn’t work. I’m not clear if the problem is in the creation of the restore point, or the ability to restore from it? Having Googled the problem it seems to have been around for quite a long time, so disappointing that it hasn’t been fixed.
DavidR I do use Macrium Reflect to create images for my system SSD (OS and programs) but at 30 minutes a go it’s not the most convenient solution. All data files are on an HDD and backed up every day. I’m more inclined to disable the self defence module if it’s unreliable!
Lisandro Thanks for that link, that looks a useful tool. You seem to imply that recovering from a restore point in safe mode will (may?) circumvent the Avast problem?

I keep my hard drives relatively clutter free and for me creating a weekly partition image (and I have 3, but relatively small) takes well under that. These are saved to my second hard drive, which probably accounts for its speed as I’m not saving to an external drive.
Re your question to Lisandro:
It isn’t so much that is circumvents the problem - avast doesn’t run in safe mode - so no self-defence module running.
This is the point of safe mode very little runs in it to overcome problems (conflict, etc.) in normal mode.
I haven’t experienced any problem with restore points and the latest version of Avast.
