System Restore Blocked by Avast

Unable to do a system restore Windows 7 desktop because an Avast file in the registry is blocking the restore. Have also tried the restore in safe made and also in safe boot with all programs (avast included) disabled and Avast self defense turned off. Still will not work. Using Avast Free Antivirus uptodate.

This is the error when I attempt a system restore:
System restore did not work. Failed to replace the file
c:\Program Data\Avast Software\Avast\sdb2.json.old
with its original copy from restore point. unexpected error OX80070002

Do I need to totally uninstall avast to get system restore to work, and, if so, will there be files left behind in the registry?

Is this the right forum to post questions about computer issues caused by Avast?

If yes, how do I get someone from Avast to help.

Thanks in advance for any help.

What operating system ???
I’ve never had a problem restoring the system via System Restore on Windows 10.
You could try a repair of Avast.

Control Panel> Program and Features (Add/remove program)>Select Avast> Select Repair. Reboot when completed

Once that’s done, create a new restore point and see if that solves your problem.

Thank you Bob3160. I did mention Windows 7 desktop. Did you need more information than that? I have never had a problem with system restore until the failure started back in April 2018.

Thank you for mentioning Avast repair. I will see if that makes a difference

Some time ago (and I do mean a long time ago) there were some people reporting issues with system restore. You could try disabling the Avast Self-Defence Module (in the avastUI > Settings > Troubleshooting) before doing a system restore. It could be the Avast Self-Defence Module trying to protect Avast from any possible changes in the system restore.

I don’t use system restore in win XP or Win7 I prefer using drive imaging software as my means of backup and restoration strategy. So I haven’t needed or used system restore on either of those OSes.

I use the Create System Image function on my win10 laptop (to an external HDD), I do this weekly and or prior to a major change (OS update, etc.) I also create a system repair disc prior to OS update, etc.

Thought I’d check this out.
Didn’t work for me. :-\

HP Envy with latest AIS beta

Thank you DavidR for that information. I had been disabling Avast self defense which did not make a difference when trying to do a system restore.

I did the Avast repair, but I’m not sure if it actually repaired anything. Tried system restore to a restore point set earlier today and it was successful. Tried to go back to a restore point about a week ago and the avast json file is still blocking the restore, so that has not changed by doing Avast repair.

For hayesc1 Macruim Macrium Free is an imaging program. It is an alternative to using system restore which he says he’ll never use again.

This is also an altgernative and it’s been part of Windows since Windows 7: https://youtu.be/m5h9Kug5HTI
