System Restore, Is it really needed?

I’m running WinXP Pro and I always find viruses in the …\System Volume Information\ folder that my AV cant handle (avast4).
Is there any hard in turning off this feature? Do I really need it?

I would say you do need it, certainly until you have something to take its place and give you a recovery option.

Whilst SR isn’t perfect and doesn’t always work as expected it is most certainly better than nothing.

If you are getting detections in the …\System Volume Information\ folder/s then they are there often because something has been deleted from the system folders and SR makes a copy just in case you made an error. This could have been the deletion or moving of an infected file out of the system folders and SR made the back-up in a …\System Volume Information_restore point.

avast can deal with infected restore points in most cases but if not, a boot-time scan can should be able to deal with them. I would also suggest a periodic cleaning of SR as it can grow very large, this can be done using disk clean up to remove all but the most recent restore point.

It can at boot time.

I won’t turn it off. It could help you if you need to restore your system partition to a previous state. Cleaning all the points and starting the feature again will do it for you. Disable System Restore on Windows ME or Windows XP. System Restore cannot be disabled on Windows 9x and it’s not available in Windows 2k. After boot you can enable System Restore again .

Good advice. Even a leaky boat is better than no boat all. ::slight_smile:

I have been using GoBack 3.1 Personal Edition with good results since my Windows XP SR has never worked correctly. It came with Norton SystemWorks, which I used many years ago, before switching to Avast. Can anyone recommend a better System Restore Application? Are there any good free ones?

You have other partition (disk) backup applications.
A system restore better than GoBack I never found… Besides this, not free ones.

Thanks Tech,

As of now I will stay with GoBack.

It does not work with dual boot. So, you can’t test Linux in this same computer. Just for your information.
