I have the latest avast Home. I did a search for tray icon and tried the tricks but it’s still not showing. I can see it scanning my emails but it’s not permanently docked. More importantly, I can’t open avast to make a scan. Any ideas?

Have you had any other AV installed on the system?
This is often the most common reason for it not being installed to avoid conflict with another AV.
The email scanning icon is only there for the duration of the email scan, have you ever seen the avast a icon in the system tray?
Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, avast! Anti-Virus, Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. You need to be on-line to do this. This is not usually enough to restore the icon.
If that doesn’t work try, uninstall, reboot, install, reboot.
I’m curious. I have never heard of this “Repair” option in Control Panel. I still don’t see what you mean. Where does it say Repair?
Click on the Change/Remove Button first, and the other options will be revealed.

Isn’t that weird. I can now see that but only after I fixed the original problem. I searched throughout the site and found aswclear.exe. I uninstalled avast and re-installed it and everything is working great! :))))
Thank you very much for helping me out David. I’m in the process of running a first scan. Looks like I’m in simple mode, is there an advanced mode for the free version?
Your welcome. The enhanced user interface is only available with the Pro version.
Groovy, tx again! Looks like I had a bad initial install, everything’s great now.
