System tray notification mismatch

Windows XP, Avast free version 6.0.1367

The system tray bubble notification says: “Warning. Your system is UNSECURED.”
The user interface indicates system is secured.

What is the issue?

When does this happen ?

If just after boot it may be that it hasn’t initialised, but by the time you open the user interface it has. If you left it alone without opening the UI, does it go away ?

Ran install repair, rebooted => same status. The notification has always said this AFIK. I doubt there is a real problem, but I wanted to make sure.

Have (or did) you another Anti-Virus installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

What other security software do you have installed, e.g. firewall, anti-spyware, etc. ?

I had the same problem and ran this:

Now, I paid the $5. Not sure if I had to.

PS-- Please note that this is an XP problem, not an avast! problem.

Delete your firewall rules and reboot.

You could also try avast main GUI → settings → updates → direct connection (no proxy).

After reboot, wait at least 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, review the info in avast main GUI → maintenance → update.

If an attempt to update was indeed performed (according to that tab in avast), please reboot again and wait again. Is the “unsecured” still there after these 10 minutes? If it is still there, repair avast and reboot again.

Please report back.
