I connect to the internet through aol. Avast requested to restart my computer with a YES/NO option. When I clicked YES the programs and system were all shut down but at restart it does not get past the final black & white screen! The normal message of “Please wait while setup updates your files. This may take a few minutes…” is followed by “Windows could not upgrade the file %1 from %2” and this is repeated over and over…
I have tried a re-boot floppy disk and this failed.
I have also tried to enter Safe Mode unsuccessfully.
WHAT CAN I DO? WHAT HAS HAPPENED?
The system is fairly old (230MHz, 132 Mg RAM, Pentium Processor) operating Windows ME. I think the Avast is version 4.7 (cant check as I am having to use my sons computer right now). There is no other anti-virus software in use and my connection through aol is protected by MacAfee Firewall.
PLEASE HELP SOON
Ignore the message “Windows could not upgrade the file %1 from %2”, just hold enter to skip it, possibly the list of upgraded files will come to end. Also pressing ctrl-c might break files update process.
After you boot into Windows, backup the files C:\Windows\WinInit.ini and WinInit.err and send them to my email. Then delete file WinInit.ini from C:\Windows folder (make sure that you don’t delete WinInit.exe, this file is needed by Windows).
Finally open Add/Remove programs, and run Repair of avast! Antivirus, or uninstall-restart-install the latest version.
