Hi,
Today I started having a problem with the task manager. If I right click the taskbar and click task manager it will not open. I don’t know if there is a way to repair it or not. Any help would be appreciated.

Can you still get to it with Ctrl-Alt-Delete?
Justin1278,
See if this helps you
[b]Enable/Disable Task Manager
This tweak disables/enables user access to Task manager. It must be applied on a user by user basis.
Back up your registry before doing this.
[Start] [Run] [Regedit]
Registry Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
Modify/Create the Value Data Type(s) and Value Name(s) as detailed below.
Data Type: DWORD Value // Value Name: DisableTaskMgr
Setting for Value Data: [0 = Enabled (Default) / 1 = Disabled]
Exit Registry and Reboot
[/b]
Hello,
It seems I had some sort of malware, because when I tried to open rededit I got a message saying it did not exist! So I did a System Restore and all is back to normal both regedit and the Task Manager are back.
~Justin1278
Now I’d suggest that you clear your restore points by shutting System Restore of, rebooting and then turning it back on.
If the system is still clean at that point, create a fresh Restore point.
One of you’re restore points is infected and the last thing you want to do is restore that one.
Hi Bob,
I have followed your instructions. All restore points were deleted and I created another one.
There are some viruses that disable functions that enable you to close them down like ending a task in task manager.
There is a tool ‘xp_emergencyutil’ (http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_emerutils.htm) that saves a copy of msconfig1.exe, Regedit.com and TaskMgr1.exe to a folder. Note the names have been slightly changed and in the regedit casr the file type has been changed to .com, this allows access to these resources if the usual ones have been disabled.
Couldn’t you use Rezjor’s Infiltration Recovery Tool? It’s a little utility that helps recover your Task Manager, Registry Editor, etc in case of a malware attack.
It’s located in Rezjor’s webpage: http://www.excessive-software.tk/
Try to see if it works. Thanks.

Wow I am very suprised ewido found 1000+ infections of the same worm!!! how the hell I got it I don’t know, but I do know it is gone now. Also for some strange reason it kept launching Limewire even after I shut it down.
