this morning when I booted up the computer. the minute I opened firefox, it went to the tech-connect site and avast flagged that it blocked a malware attack. A few minutes later the entire machine was locked up. Nothing was responding, even shut down. I had to do a hard shutdown with the power switch.
Feels like everything I did last night has undone overnight.
Have some patience.

How is your PC behaving now?
I opened firefox and it went to the regular homepage without the malware pop-up so looks pretty good.
I also noticed, before this most recent scan that I was getting a bunch of messages from windows 10 that various associations for file type had been lost and that it was re-setting them to a particular default ( e.g. .jpeg reset to Photos)
Is there anting else I should be doing? I have another Windows 10 machine that is acting the same way. I will probably go after that one this evening (my time - GMT-8).

What do you mean by:
Is there anything else I should be doing?
The resetting of filetype associations is a known problem in Windows 10 if you install software and you tell it to open certain filetypes.
I was just wondering if my problem on this machine is solved or if there are any other scans I need to do.
Yes malware is removed. You should tell me if everything runs okay.
