so last week i download avast home(english). i loved it, i joined this forum, planned to continue using it and maybe even get pro. i also had norton security on my computer and was told by people here to remove it and then get another spyware program to go olong with my avast and adaware. so i removed norotn. ever since, i can’t get a connection speed any better than 14.1 kbps. that;s right, i’m on dial up (netzero) as nothing else is available where i live. before i removed norton and had it and avast i was connecting at my ususal 25-31 kbps. now with just adaware and avast i have not once gotten a connection better than 14.1kbps. in 2 days, probably over 100 attempts. i’ve run scans, i’ve deleted my temp int files, i’ve kept avast updated. and now because of my connection speed i can’t even connect fast enogh to download a firewall and i’ve deleted my $50.00 norton because every1 here said to do it as soon as possible. wtf is the deal here? any suggestions?
Are you sure you have COMPLETELY uninstalled your Norton
Anti-virus program !? Did you follow the info in Symantec-
Norton “Document ID:2003080311011006” ? Did you also
use the remove/uninstall option in your Add/Remove
Programs for any “Live Update(Symantec),LiveUpdate
(Symantec),Norton WMI Update” ? Have you used your
computer’s “Search/Find” feature to look for any “leftover”
Symantec/Norton “Files and Folders” ? Have you used a
“registry cleaner”, like the “evaluation copy” ( FREE ) of
“Registry First Aid”, available at www.rosecitysoftware.com?
hi, yes to everything except the norton document. but i’ve removed everything else and used cleanup as well as searched for any remaining files or folders. the point is that my computer was working fine when i had norton and avast on it at the same time. it was only when i removed norton as i was told i needed to do that this all started. and at this point i’m not even able to download any other tools to use due to the connections i am getting now. what else can i do. i didn’t want to stop using avast, i thought it was great, but this is a joke. it takes me 10 minutes from when i try to log on to when i can pull up this site.
Yes, dump dial-up and go on broadband. ;D
But seriously, if you re-install norton, does that speed up your internet connection?
trust me i would sell my car if it would make broadband available here. dial-up is my only option and they have no intention of offering dsl or cable any time soon where i live. i did download the registry cleaner from rose city software but it says that i can only fix 18 files or so unless i register and buy it. which really sucks because it found over 1000 entries to fix. am i doing something wrong, do i have to keep scanning over and over and just do 18 files at a time? i thought i would have complete access to use this for free for the first 30 days. i appreciate any help and ideas you can give me about all of this because i would like to continue using avast. as far as reinstalling norton, it would be a waste of time because i would have to re-update it from the beginning and with the connection i have, even on a good day it takes 1-2 hours to do just 1 update. it would take me weeks to get current again at this point.
To reduce the speed, the only possibility is a WebShield (an avast provider) interaction… Can you try to disable it and test your speed?
Please, right now, do not run Registry Cleaner if you’re experiencing trouble… let this for a week from now, when we could know what is really happening. Luck 8)
I am on Dial-up and used all the steps I mentioned earlier
to successfully uninstall my Norton Anti-virus 2004 today;
the Norton-Symantec “document” is mainly for steps that
should be taken PRIOR to clicking the “Remove” button in
Add/Remove Programs. Regarding Registry First Aid; I used
the 14 “items” at a time numerous times to remove all the
“Safe” level entries it found. The process can go quickly if
you press the “Back” button, then “re-start” the “removal
process”; it took me about 35 minutes to remove 550 items.
Can always “register” the product to all 1,000 items at once
for only $29.95 if want to save time !? Or try another
registry cleaner, like RegCleaner from Jouni Vuoro software?
Might try looking through the registry cleaner section of
majorgeeks.com to see what is there !?
Norton (Symantec) products are notoriously difficult to uninstall. Simply using the Add/Remove Programs function will not suffice. There are registry entries that must be removed as well. Doing so manually is tedious and risky even for those skilled at registry editing. Symantec and several other vendors offer utilities that do this for you. I would provide a link to the specific utility if I knew which Norton product and version you have. My suggestion would be to google “uninstalling Norton XXX XXX” and follow a link to the utility. I would then uninstall Avast, run the Norton utility, reboot and reinstall avast. Good luck.

You could try to update your modem driver if it isn’t already. Find out who makes it and what driver version you have now, and see if you can find a newer one. Maybe that will help. Maybe even just reinstalling your modem driver might help. Make sure your modem connection properties are set high, like 19200 or higher.
How do you know your connection is slower than normal? Through a popup balloon in the task tray? If so, then either a new modem driver would help, or adjust your phone cords better/shorter. I’ve seen even with my DSL, that when I add too many splitters/junction boxes, I get way under the speed I should normally get.
I know this is totally unlikely but is there a chance that the modem cable has been damaged or come loose at all? Also how many devices have you got plugged into the telephone socket? I’ve known somebody to have reduced internet performance when the sockets been loaded heavily.
Cheers

The best advise now is:
- Backup your personal files
- Format your disk
- Reinstall Windows
- Reinstall avast
- Restore your files
