Whenever I install new software, I turn off the cable modem and close all running programs, including anti-virus. In fact, many programs specifically advise you to turn off any A-V software you have running before attempting an installation.
To temporarily turn off avast! (version 4.6 Home Edition), do I open the list of installed providers, and of the ones I have running, terminate each one individually, one at a time, or is there another one-click operation to disable the program while the software is being itstalled?
Should I use the “pause” button or the “terminate” button to disable each provider?
My previous A-V program had a simple “disable” function that turned everything off with one click, and it could be later “enabled” with a similar click. I have found no such function with avast!
There will be someone here to give you that answer Don. Just thought I would let you know your post was read. Sorry I can’t be of any help. 73 es QRZ.

There’s no reason to disable antivirus program before installing an application, no matter what the installer says (actually, I’d certainly recommend against it).
But if you for whatever reason should want to pause Avast, Leftclick a-ball in systray and pause each of the providers, or pause all of them with one click depending on your detailed settings.
Pause does what it says and terminate can be persistant or not, you get a question.

But not much gain. You have to stop(or pause) each provider at a time,
if you have set it up to show details, otherwise you get one click here too ,
as with “my” method.
It shows the flexibility of Avast, the same thing can be achieved in a different ways.
