Text File Sent - How to determine if it is hacker

I received a SMS text message from a number I don’t recognize. It had a file with it, but when I opened it there was nothing there all it said was “B”. I get files all the time because of work. But I want to find out if this file has something hidden in it, like hacker or tracer stuff, etc. Because B is my first initial. How can I determine that? Can I send the file to avast to have them check it, if so how do I do that? Thanks

Well, generally, files to be analyzed should be sent to

But, you know, they receive a lot of files there each day.
Please, write down in the email body what is happening and a link to this forum thread.

It is not doing anything, my concern is it a tracking file or something worse, a hacker file to get my info?

Hi,

how did the message look like? It was a SMS with a hyperlink?

Filip

No it came in as a text, with multimedia slideshow attached. when I opened, all it had was a black screen and my initial “B” in the middle? I am forwarding it to a bogus email address I have set up so I can attach it here. Give me a few minutes.

It will not forward for some reason? Even though ALL my other texts can be forwarded to an email address? Now that to me is just weird!

I actually didn’t know you can attach a file to a SMS. You sure it wasn’t a MMS?

Filip

It may be MMS Filip, I used to be able to get “Message Details” to tel me if it was MMS or SMS, but it appears I can no longer view that info? I have Verizon Android…older version.

If you have the file stored on SD card, you can scan the card using avast! Mobile Security. If it’s clean, you can connect your SD card to your PC via USB and do a manual scan using avast! 7 and see if it is infected or not.

Filip

Great, can you tell me how to scan it while it is in my phone? That would be wonderful. Thanks Filip

Just run avast! Mobile Security, go to Virus Scanner, check “Scan SD card” and perform the scan.

You can also try to upload it to https://www.virustotal.com/ from your phone and let it be scanned there.
