The resulting solar storm could cause a geomagnetic storm on Earth, knocking out electricity grids around the world for hours, days, or even months, bringing much of normal life grinding to a halt.
As I don’t want to think beyond 2012, there are more serious implications: think of pacemakers etc., agree that watching tele and the Internet would be one of the more trivial issues to worry about,
Just had a powercut…nothing like three hours in the dark to remind you how much we rely on electricity…and I was in the middle of a game of HALO on my xbox >:(
Yes, this works a bit like my Click&Clean extension in GoogleChrome, but on a larger scale. Did the dinosaurs also experience a likewise fate? I forgot to ask the Flintstones ;D ,
2012 isn’t any different than the big scare about 2000.
Lot’s of wasted efforts over nothing.
Lots of worries by some folks right now about 2012 also over nothing.
Enjoy each day to the fullest and treat it like a gift.
Never worry about tomorrow.
Tomorrow never comes. Yesterday is already gone so enjoy today everyday.
It all depends on the amplitude of the solar flare, the position of ther Earth in the solar system and even the rotation phase of the Earth (if the flare hits USA directly, there will be more damage due to DNS registrars there).
But if the amplitude will be high enough it won’t matter really which side is facing the sun…
I remember the episode of Perfect Disaster on Discovery. There was one episode about solar flares.
The solar radiation knock off power for several months in the US.
If they can predict that, then at least we can prepare for it. They need to shut down the power grids for a couple of hours or else the grids will go wacko.
Agree with you totally. Yesterday can hurt us no more. The past is water under the bridge. The future has not arrived yet until tomorrow, so no sense worrying about that either. So all we have to live for is today. So give it your fullest effort and enjoy every minute as the present lasts.
The 2012 thing is a New Age issue resting on a way of interpreting the old Mayan Indian Elders’ prophesies because a certain point in the galaxies is coming around again after roughly 26.000 years (Serpent of/in the Universe, their Snake God, Sun behind the Sun of the old Egyptians, could be something like when Moses parted the waters at the red sea, a cataclysm of some sort, some folks think about a polar shift and all the turmoil that will bring, not a good place here in Holland to experience such a fate). Well 2012 is an “occult” believe sort of.
The year 1000 brought the same anxieties for the Christians, in a nearby village no church nor dikes were being built, because the End of the World was imminent, well you know about similar issues before the Turn of the Millennium in the Year 2000, what happened? Nothing out of the obvious, goods became more expensive, and we just went on doing our daily things, ;D
Actually the Mayan calendar is only one of the things pointing at 2012. There are others. I’m not saying I believe Doomsday is near but as a Christian I do believe it will happen some day. The Mayan calendar is based on a 5000 something year celestial cycle and since it was found on a circular stone tablet seems to me not to be saying that the world will end but simply that the cycle will end and then start over again. Just like the hands on a clock. The amazing thing about it and the real mystery is how the Mayans were able to so accurately chart and predict this cycle without any instruments like telescopes, satellite pictures or even any way to save images of the night sky at all. It would take generations of naked eye observations and some way of measurement that we haven’t discovered (or have forgotten) to even come close and they nailed it right on the head. It’s astounding and so far, inexplicable.
I have to agree with Dch48 and polonus … most experts on Mayan culture and history agree that the Mayans never did predict apocalypse for 2012, and all that will happen is that their calendar will “roll over” back to its start, same as a video-game score does if you’re good enough at it.
Admittedly, commercial films about 2012 (like the one with that as its title) are exciting to watch, but they’re strictly sci-fi speculation, and most of us who are old enough to remember the older films in that genre are well aware that many of them turned out to be way off-base in regard to the way things turned out in reality.
As for that sunspot “crisis”, as has been pointed out, we’ll just have to wait and see how serious the effects will be on us.
