The Best StandAlone / On-demand AV - Suggestions??

I wanted a standalone AV with no real time protection . I mean an on demand AV. Any suggestions?

Edited

stand alone?

in my point of view stand alone AV is not yet invented

but if you want a no change of settings, no updates, everything will be the same as fresh install every time you open it?

so try deep frozen

no updates, no save, everything back as first install.

So Stand Alone AV’s are dead

Isn’t ClamWin a standalone AV?

To be more specific On-demand

EDITED: Changed the title

Two I use are Kaspersky AVZ Antiviral Toolkit and Dr.Web CureIt! Neither installs on your system or has real time protection. The AVZ database can be updated through the program (almost daily updates) while with Dr Web you have to download the whole package again. Other options include on-line and cloud scanners.

Edit: Forgot to mention the AVZ UI is in English but the help files are in Russian.

@ Simion

Thanks for the suggestions…

You’re welcome. See my Edit!

for me the best is avast 5.0.462, and malwarebytes antimalware.
its work my system as a team.
if i only have avast the hijack system still hijack

if i only have malwarebytes the malaware is regenerated after removal because the root is still inside my system

best regards!!!

Hi Simion,

Interesting options!

How good are their detection rates?

Are the Kaspersky toolkit & Dr. Web Cureit compatible with Avast Free & MBAB real time?

Is there still a need for a real time AV if this combo is great?

Regards!

Hi Yezinki!

How good are their detection rates?
Less than Avast, the theory is to get a second opinion, maybe something Avast failed to detect.
Are the Kaspersky toolkit & Dr. Web Cureit compatible with Avast Free & MBAB real time?
Avast yes, not sure about MBAM real time. Still, I disconnect from the internet and disable all real time protection before running these tools.
There is need for a real time AV if there combo is great?
Yes, you still need real time because these programs are only for demand scanning.

Simion

Thanks Simion,

I shall keep you informed about their detections & conflicts if any with either.

Regards!

i use a² free 4 on demand scanning.
has one of the highest dedection/update rates out there, important 4 zero-days, imo.

Thanks Asyn,

a 2 squared Free 4.5 is both an antimalware & antivirus, on demand scanner……am I correct………does it have any conflicts with Avast or MBAM?

The reviews are stunning.

Regards!

yes, it’s both, thats the good thing bout it… ;D
if u use the free version it’s on demand only! which works well. only negative thing is, that u have 2 update it manually, but since used on demand, thats not so much of a prob… no probs with avast or mbam here, but i even dropped mbam, since it’s redundant using a².
bout the reviews: many av/am vendors have good reviews on their sites, but i talk bout experience - used it for quite a time now and did really good work, even on things avast/mbam couldn’t dedect - and i fully trust avast!!
asyn

Agreed…reviews should be taken with a pinch…what really counts is on ground effectiveness.

Thanks!

Asyn should I uninstall MBAB resident as you say it’s ancient??

Regards!

  1. never said it’s ancient - it’s still a good sw.
  2. if u use the resident mbam, u already paid 4 it, i guess, so why would u like 2 drop it?
  3. you can run mbam and! a² if u like. (as on demand scanners, as stated in earlier post)

i, 4 me, dropped mbam free, which had no further usage 4 me. (freed some mem and diskspace)
asyn

Ok…but I could uncheck the resident mode to free some memory…would that be a smart move?

if u ask, if i would do so… yes!
but i’m quite strict to this, thats why i’m running a fast & well protected system, imo. please consider 4 urself, that i have a quite huge knowledge of my system and sw running on it. doesn’t mean everything i do here, is also good 4 you. there are much more sec-related things than av/am/fw/sb etc.
asyn

Thanks for sharing your personal thoughts!

I will prefer Malwarebytes over A squared… ;D
