The manual sequence (the steps I must do) of updating the VPS database is not very clear to me.
I downloaded vpsupd.exe (the VPS latest and greatest for avast! 4.1 Home Version as of this post) into a Temp folder on my D: drive. I have Windows 98 SE on the C: drive, but install all programs on the D: drive in the Programs Files folder … including Avast!
Anyway, I double click on vpsupd.exe and get the following error message displayed in a pop-up window titled “Setup Selfextract”:
"An error 82(00000052) has occured. Last performed operation was extracting main exe.
Pop-up Window has the big circular red circle with white X and the OK button.
Alright, so something went wrong and it is probably something I did. Does it matter which folder the vpsupd.exe gets downloaded into? If so, where specifically should I download it before attempting to execute the VPS update action?
I’m looking for the steps that one would take to manually update the VPS database when one doesn’t have internet connection.
I understand your description clearly, but that is not what I thought the “manual” method was. I’ve done as you described a few times …
What I was thinking (and have experienced) is the situation where the avast! polling software was unable to connect to any of the seven (7) servers in the network for whatever reason, i.e., say, a problem on my end or simply the various servers did not respond to the polling action of the avast software. If no communication is established between the avast polling software and the servers, one is not “dead in the water”. One can go to the avast web site and download manually the vps update data file itself (vpsupd.exe, I think is what it is named for the avast 4.1 version, while there is also a vpsupd40.exe for the earlier avast 4.0 version) to one’s system.
So, my question really should have probably read “Where should I exactly download this data file (vpsupd.exe)?” Once downloaded into the proper location, then I assume I can take the steps you described and it will kick off the actual update process … or do I need to do any other additional actions or steps specific to complete the whole virus database update process?
Hopefully, this time around I have done a better job of describing what I would like to know.
The updates (database) are usually on Tuesdays and Thursdays… So in the morning of the next days will be a good time. Anyway, the manual update (.vps file) is not as ‘on-line’ as the automatic procedure. Don’t worry, without an Internet connection you will be safer than with one (as virus are usually spread by the web nowadays…).
Actually, it used to be Tuesdays and Fridays. However, there are so many new (and spreading!) viruses today that since the beginning of the year, we often had like 4-5 updates weekly; there even were 3 updates in one single day.
