The new Avast home 4.6 wont update!

I have WinXP SP2
and after updating my avast antivirus 2.5 to 2.6, i always get messege “avst was not able to connect to dounload15.avast.com
It was updating itself before i install the new version, but not any more??
What do you think is the problem?
I do not think it is from my Zonealarm.

Same problem here, but I don’t think Avast is even trying to connect- at least, my firewall is not notifying me of it trying to connect. (I don’t already have a rule for it, and when something tries to connect it’ll tell you)

-using outpost

also… the surfing speed of my firefox has dropped noticiblyyyyyyyyyy …!!!

Provided your connectivity is fine (which I assume), this is almost always a firewall issue. I know that firewalls usually ask you for permissions - but they sometimes fail to do so (don’t ask me why).

I’d suggest retrying with the firewall disabled.

Handsome, about the WebShield, what are your Privacy control settings in ZA?

It’s high for ad blocking and med for cookies!

Moving the Ad Blocking slider to Medium should solve the problem.
We’re currently trying to find a workaround so that it will work even with High.

Thanks
Vlk

thanks Vlk…
But it did not help?!
what’s good about having web shied on ?? how does it help protecting me?
Thanks

It did not help? Did you restart the browser?
About WebShield - please see e.g. http://www.avast.com/eng/whats_new_in_avastve.html#1

yeah … even when restarting the browser!!
Im 100% sure it is from web shield.
I tried browsing when it is on and it was not working good, but when i turn it off … browsing is normal … even when my privacy settings for ad blocking in ZA is med ???

Hi folks,

Same issue here. I know there is a new virus database available so I try the iavs update manually from the tray and avast doesn’t attempt to connect. I notice it doesn’t try to automatically update itself since the last downloads for 4.6.
I also tried from the other areas in the Main GUI of Avast Antivirus and the same result. I saw the earlier posts and stopped my Zone Alarm and the results.

So, I’ll try the download from the website and install locally to see if the definitions update that way…

hope this helps…

Vlk-
Any new news on this 4.6 issue?

Re-cap. 4.6.603 doesn’t auto update nor does it update manually iAVS or program… Based on my tests, it does not appear to be a connection issue.

This is the problem I have been on about since the 24th Feb.
I have uninstalled Zone Alarm with no improvement, auto updates just refuses to work, the “update now” in
(basic) does not do a thing.

I’ve noticed this twice yesterday :frowning:

Update on my posts here about 4.6 not updating

Now this is truly odd… When exiting my Zone Alarm the other day … no other changes… Avast auto updates the definition files. Twice now!! Yeah! And I tried to see if there’s a Program update - it connected! - no update though

It’s odd b/c I swear I terminated ZA while troubleshooting the problem when the 4.6.603 rev installed. And, now it’s updating. But only without ZA runing! Immediately after the install of 4.6, I couldn’t see any attempts or alerts from ZA of it attempting to connect and besides my settings allow Avast to behave freely (the new version)

I guess there really are big compatibility issues with it and ZA.

****SO COuLD Ya PleASe make a FireWall to complement your WebShield that I can use for webbug, application and port control? That’s the only need I have for zone alarm anyway now-a-days. Pretty Please??? I know - you can name it " Avast-A-Wall!!! ;D

Since Winxppro and IE6 sp2 gives better cookie and pop-up control than ZA and the Window’s firewall is ok but could be a bit more feature rich and offer more functionality. Now’s the time… When using FireFox, I don’t have too many worries… yet.

Cheers.
PS. I’m going to keep ZAPro off for q while and run a bunch of port scanning tests and log some things and see if I can live without it (yah I know it just cost me $$ for the new vs.) and will report her in a few days if I survive…

Shelfimage,
A new pre-release version of avast will be delivered tomorrow. Please update. It will fix all, among other things, the Zone Alarm & avast issues.

Great News!

I just finished a lot of testing with only WinXpProsp2’s built in Firewall combined with my Netopia’s router/firewall and Avast’s WebShield and I’m happy.

I did port scans with and without ZA and I faired better without ZA. Apparently it opens some ports that are not huge risks, but I don’t need them open. Without ZA I’m quite secure except my router keepds the telnet port open, but I keep it disabled and blocked on the PC LAN side.

Go figure - all this nonsense and I might dup the ZA if I can deal with the loss of decent application control, web bugs and some banner ad control. LOL
