I searched the board for “red circle” and “RPC Error” but found only masses of users haveing problems avast isn’t starting at all.
But my problem is: Avast is starting after 20 to 160 Seconds.
My OS ist XP (Home Edition) SP2 with all Updates available. Avast is the only program installed and it’s not a hard disk error, because i tied it with different hard disks.
The main problem is that no programm starts while Avast shows the red circle. In the worst case I’m damned to sit in front of my computer waiting for 2 Minutes.
This is usually an indication of the presence of another AV or remnants of one. Have (or did) you have another AV installed in this system, if so what and how did you get rid of it ?
Does the red circle go away after the 20-160 seconds ?
What is the sensitivity setting on the Standard Shield provider, Normal (default), High (more files scanned), etc. ?
What is your firewall, does it have an anti-virus/spyware element to it ?
FAQ didn’t help. Worked through it and nothing changed.
There was no other AV on this computer. I’m using a brand new hard disk. And I havn’t copied any old files to it.
On the “old” system I used avast without a problem.
Yes, the red circle goes away after 20 to 160 seconds. At my Moms Laptop it sometimes takes up to 6 minutes. She hates me for installing an AV to her computer :
The shield setting on the standart Shield provider is on “normal”
I have no firewall installed yet. I’m working on a second computer (with a perfect running avast), where I keep all my data and internet connection.
My boot time over all is about 1 minute 30 seconds to the logon screen and 30 seconds after. Once my avast icon appears, there is no red circle at the start that goes away later. So there is something that is effectively stopping avast getting started properly, effectively hanging the system until it does start.
Are there any entries in the windows event logs which might give more information ?
I have the same problem although the “red circle” eventually goes off after about 15 seconds for me. I can’t figure out what is causing it. I have no remnants of previous antivirus installed on my computer, and I only have free zonealarm and avast which run at startup.
My default settings are how they should be, and avast is set to normal.
My Computer is a Pentium 4 with 2.53 processor and 512MB Ram, running Windows XP.
I have only ever seen the red circle over the avast icon once on my system and it was only there for a few seconds and all I can think of the the order things might be loaded on boot and something that avast requires isn’t fully loaded yet.
Other than that I’m at a loss if you have tried the usual things that would cause this on a more permanent basis, e.g. another AV or remnants of it.
The red circle appears on my avast icon at every startup for about 5/6 seconds.
I also try to ensure that I only have the services I need at startup. I do use the delayed check for avast updates (mine is set to 90 seconds) and I, as others have noted, still experience a definite system sluggishness when avast is updating the VPS file.
I doubt that my system is underpowered, dual 3Ghz processors, 1Gb memory and SATA Ultra internal disk drives (the system is only 3 months old). The SATA drives are defragmented daily. A recent BootVis update made no difference to the appearance of the red circle.
While I have no concerns about the 5/6 second delay in terms of security and I am glad that the delay is not as prolonged as those experienced by other users the sluggishness during avast VPS updates is somewhat irritating. I try to believe it is the price we pay for security.
However, this may well appear to some users to be a contributing factor to the delay in the general availabilty of their system for use at startup. It might well make sense for the VPS starup delay to be managed via the user interface rather via ini file update, making it easier for some users to reduce the frustration they feel at prolonged startup delays by separating the startup and VPS update impacts.
I too think that introducing a delay in the Update (Connections) settings. If the user ticks the ‘My computer is permanently connected to the internet’ option then this delay box is active (not greyed out), this would show the default value and allow for it to be changed.
If not in the Update (connections) then in the Update (Basic), but it is a little more crowded, if it were put in the Update (Basic) Details it could perhaps go in the ‘Auto update interval’ section under the ‘Auto update every’ xxx minutes entry, ‘Delay update on Start-up’ xxx seconds.
Either that or increase the default delay to say 120 seconds.
I think it’s ok now. I figured zonealarm might have been the cause of my problem so I uninstalled it and completely removed all traces of it on my computer. I reinstalled zonealarm again and the red circle has stopped coming on now. The welcome screen at startup seems to stay on for about 4-5 seconds longer than before, but the blue avast icon comes on and starts spinning straight away now.
