The stub cannot run installer/updater executable

Good morning,

I have a Windows 7 enterprise x64 with avast 8 free installed. I need to uninstall it but the uninstaller do not start.

If I try to reinstall I get the error:The stub cannot run installer/updater executable c:\program files\avast software\avast\setup\sfx\avast.setup (code 0x3)

The same error with aswclear.exe in safe mode.

Any idea how to solve the problem or manually uninstall?

You are not alone with this one because I have exactly same happening on our W7 home edition. It’s a pain! Everything else works fine so have just added alternative AV until can find solution. Would like to completely remove Avast and start again but won’t want to do reinstall when so difficult to fix! When I rang the help line their solution was to pay for a costly support package, which I don’t want either.
