I have zone alarm firewall and windows xp.
Thanking you in advance.

AVG or avast?

Do you use any other antivirus in your computer?

Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair). You must be connected to the internet while repairing.

If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?

No at the moment, I had AVG free edition but I think that I cleared all the avg files and folders from my pc.
I also tried to repair, remove and reinstall using control panel and aswclear.exe.

I suggest an installation from the scratch.

First of all, be sure AVG is not more installed in your system, no Grisoft folders, etc.
Then:

  1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
  2. Boot.
  3. Use Avast Uninstall for complete uninstallation.
  4. Boot.
  5. Install again the last version.
  6. Boot.
  7. Check and post the results.

I did it and it worked…! but I am having another problem now. When the database was updated i got simple user interface…! I don’t like this skin but I don’t know how to change it… I can’t see a menu to select the skin…

Right click inside the SUI skin and a pop-up menu will be displayed (or see image), click select skin. From the next screen you can choose to download others or select one of the others included in the installation.

There are many good ones or you can go for skinless interface.

it doesn’t work… i tried that before but when i click in the SUI nothing happens… I just get a menu with:=move- size -minimize -close and about avast…

So, right clicking in the centre of the skin or clicking the Button at the top left of the skin doesn’t bring up the menu in the first image ?

I take it that you are using the skin example image I posted ?

If you move the mouse pointer over a button on the skin you should get a Tooltip to say briefly what the button/option does, do you get that ?

Choose the skins you like and download them here: http://www.avast.com/eng/skins.html
Download them and double-click the donwloaded files to load a new skin.

yes I right click and nothing…! David, I didn’t see any image…? did you attached it?

I posted 3 images all together, two in « Reply #5 and 1 in « Reply #7 so I don’t know why you don’t see them.

What happens if you click the Menu button (at the top left of the skin) as I suggested ?
It is like an up arrow with an underline [u][1] in the centre of the button.

You could try the manual download from the link Tech gave.

Hi David, I can’t see any images…! I don’t know why…
But I don’t think we are talking about the same skin.
I will describe what I can see:
In the head blue line I can see : Avast! simple user interface
left hand side I can see in vertical numbers from one to four (with a circle around them).
and right hand side are the area to scan, type or scan, information and scan.

Begoña, did you try other skins like I’ve posted before?

What you are looking at is the skinless inteface.

Try this, Right click the “a” icon near the clock. Click program settings. Make sure the box is checked beside Enable skins for simple user interface.

This is because you are using the skinless interface, which is strange as the default setting is to use skins and obviously if you aren’t using skins you won’t see an option to change it.

Oldman has given you an image of the skinless interface, which if you are having a problem with images you might not see it. However, following his instruction should allow for you to use skins in the SUI, then you should be able to get the Menu option to select skin and or download others as we have previously mentioned.

Good luck.

yes, it works now…! thanks a million to all of you

Glad you got it working. Could you please tell use what you did?

Glad you have it working, I too don’t like mysteries ;D

I just did what oldman ask me to do:

Right click the “a” icon near the clock. Click program settings. Make sure the box is checked beside Enable skins for simple user interface.

thanks again and I am sure I will talk to you again…!

That is strange as that is on by default. The main thing is it is working, there really are some good skins on the avast site. I particularly like avist by SCZ and silhouette_1in1 also by SCZ.

Stick around and browse the forums, especially the sticky topics at the top of each of the forums, not to mention the avast help file. They provide a wealth of information to help you get the best from avast.
