Is your W2k up to date. (I know, a funny question, but I mean for your system…?)
If yes, you can install the latest version of avast! (6.0.1203)
http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe

Even without installing a newer version of Avast, you could check yourself your settings:

Avast main GUI → Settings → Updates.

Do you have “engine and database” updates set to “automatic”?

In that same section, could you try setting the “Proxy Settings” to “no proxy”?

Then save the settings, REBOOT, connect to the Internet, and wait several minutes so to let Avast update all the database (it could be 200KB, or it could get to all the database, about 30MB ).

After waiting several minutes, check “Main GUI → Maintenance → Update” to confirm if the database was indeed updated.

Hello

An info on my computer os gived this:

OS Name Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
Version 5.0.2195 Service Pack 4 Build 2195

Yes I have the “engine and database” updates set to “automatic”

Every day, Avast do try to update the engine and database but there is a pop-up error message who say that there was an error during the update. Few weeks ago there was no problems.

I have gone to Avast free web site download section and they redirected me to 01_Net web site to download Avast 6.0.1125.0 , so I’ve downloaded it and wen I double click on the file it is runing the setup but it do not install Avast 6.0.1125.0 , Why it’s not installing it ?

And what about the Proxy settings in that same section of Avast’s settings?

Every day, Avast do try to update the engine and database but there is a pop-up error message who say that there was an error during the update. Few weeks ago there was no problems.
Any chance you could quote here the exact error message?
I have gone to Avast free web site download section and they redirected me to 01_Net web site to download Avast 6.0.1125.0 ,
I don't know what this "01_Net" web site is, but maybe I have been updating Avast for so long, that I don't remember how the official Avast's website looks like? Maybe the real problem is that you are being redirected to some other site, and you are downloading a fake Avast installer? I may be completely wrong here, so probably you should double check this. BTW, 6.0.1125 is NOT the latest stable version, if that's what you are looking for.
so I've downloaded it and wen I double click on the file it is runing the setup but it do not install Avast 6.0.1125.0 , Why it's not installing it ?
Well, maybe because it is not the real Avast installer?

I would recommend downloading the latest official stable version of Avast from the official Avast website, and also download the Clean Uninstall tool from Avast, and run it under Windows Safe Mode. Then reboot and install the new latest stable version of Avast (and reboot again).

Hello

I have the french version of Avast 5.1.889

I have set it to no proxy.

The exact error message are in french. Here is the translation:

"Avast information!

The last attempt to update failed.
To assure the protection against the
more recent threats, please try to update
now it viral VPS base.

Update now."

The 01_Net web site Avast 6.0.1125.0 are a french version of Avast.

I’ve follow the web link from my Avast software. I include images of the links
where I’ve found Avast and the redirection to 01_Net web site link image, and also the image of the error message wen Avast try to update the viral VPS base. I did
crop the images to fit for the forum max images sizes.

Download and install the latest version.
I provided the link in Reply #1.

Hello

I live in mountain, where there is only low speed internet connection, it did take 3 hour to download the Avast version 6.0.1125.0 , so I would prefer not to download Avast again.

And I’m french speaking and it’s easyer for me to use the french version of Avast, the link you give me are the english version.

Thank

Gaetan

It’s a multilingual version. French is included.

You should use a free download manager, so to reduce the possibility of corruption of the download file.
Using a well known repository as near to your area as you can could improve your chances of getting “the correct file”.
In addition, filehippo.com has older versions too, JFYI.

And I'm french speaking and it's easyer for me to use the french version of Avast, the link you give me are the english version.
Even if you install Avast using the English installer, you can change/add the language afterwards from Avast settings -> Language.

There is an additional alternative, but I can’t assure you that the problem won’t come back again.

The complete database can be downloaded too, instead of the program+database. From the 2 options, I would recommend downloading the complete program, but the database alone is there. It is still around 30MB, which is much more than the usual download (around 200KB).

But before downloading anything, I’d like you to check:

Avast Settings → Updates → “UPDATE PARAMETERS” → “I only connect to the internet using a dial up modem”. Save the settings and REBOOT.

Since you have a low band connection, maybe this setting is your solution to normal automatic database updates (which is around 200KB or even less).

Hello

I allready use a download manager.

My Avast are allready set for using a dial up modem.

Hello

Today I did installed the latest version of avast(6.0.1203)

I did set the updates to automatic.

But the error message are still poping up.

The exact error message are in french. Here is the translation:

"Avast information!

The last attempt to update failed.
To assure the protection against the
more recent threats, please try to update

I have no clue why this error message.

Any hints ?

Did you set avast! to: Direct Connection (No Proxy)

So, nothing new. The same recommendations. The same questions from forum users, that probably will receive the same answers of the previous posts of this same topic.

Proxy?
Dial up modem?
Automatic database updates?

Did you used the Clean Uninstall tool of Avast under Windows Safe mode so to delete all previous traces of Avast, before running the latest installation?

Do you still have old Avast files in the Windows temp folder after the Clean Uninstall?

Please read the previous suggestions (specially using the clean uninstall tool under Windows Safe Mode).

Hello

Yes, I’ve done as you suggest.

I did used the Clean Uninstall tool of Avast under Windows Safe mode.

All previous traces of Avast was deleted before running the latest installation.

And I have done you 3 other suggestions.

So, it’s another thing who do that update problems.

How about getting myself, manually, the updates on the Avast web site, where are
those update files in the Avast web site ?

Thank

Bye

Gaetan

Do you still have old Avast files in the Windows temp folder after the Clean Uninstall? Try to delete them under Windows Safe Mode.

If the problem is somewhere else, then it could be almost “anything”, from your internet cache (which you should delete), your internet connection, or the specific Avast server you are connecting to (and/or MANY other things).

If you are asking about how to perform a “manual update”, as oppose to an automatic update, then right click the Avast tray icon and select to update. This downloads around 200KB, when a new database update is actually available.

You can download the entire database from http://www.avast.com/virus-update-history (not 200KB, but around 30MB, much bigger), but after applying the update, the problem might return tomorrow (or it may not, who knows).

If you can, try the database download, and please report back. If that doesn’t work (you will only know in 12 to 24 hours, after reboot), someone from Avast Team might need to come to this topic and request for some specific logs from you. So, again, please report back to get the help you need.

Hello

I’m surprise, tonight the automatic Avast database update work perfect !

I just hope it will keep working good.

Thank all
