hi I’m new to avast. I’ve installed avast but haven’t uninstall Norton Antivirus + Norton Internet Security. Everytime when I connect to the internet the Norton Antivirus would say that there’s a infostealer and it’s inside a folder of avast!

Also I’ve scanned the computer yesterday and 27 trojan horses were found and I’ve moved them all to chest. Now I’m thinking whether I should delete them. If yes how can I do it?

G’day cobber, You will find that your PC karma will be 100% when you get rid of N…s, You should only run one Antiviral prog at a time. Rule of thumb, One Antiviral - Many Spyware. and dont worry about the beasty,s in the vault, they can,t get out and do any harm. ;D

I had to remove NAV a long time ago…
Well, I survived untill now… I’m avast since then.
See How important is it to completely remove Norton? topic.

  1. Please, browse the Symantec website and download the specific uninstall tool for NAV. It will clean trash left behing by NAV (files, registry keys). You need this to proper working with avast.

  2. Can you try to repair your installation? Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair). If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?

  3. You can delete folders/files under either ‘Norton’ or ‘Symantec’ folder, the others under Liveupdate folders and ApplicationData…

  4. On Registry, well good Registry Cleaners could do some work.
    But, for me, the only thing I would worry about is the VDD keys. You must have the following entry there:

C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\aswMonVd.dll

Can you post the contents of these Windows Registry keys in your system?

You have done the right thing, ‘first do no harm’ don’t delete, send virus to the chest and investigate.

There is no rush to delete anything from the chest, a protected area where it can do no harm. Anything that you send to the chest you should leave there for a few weeks. If after that time you have suffered no adverse effects from moving these to the chest, scan them again (inside the chest) and if they are still detected as viruses, delete them.

But in these few days Norton has found some virus which cannot be found by avast!

Having two resident scanners installed is not recommended as rather than provide twice the protection it can cause conflicts that could leave you more vulnerable.

avast when it detects another resident AV like Norton (spit) is likely to disable elements to avoid such conflict and a possible system lock-up, so I’m not surprised avast isn’t working correctly.

You have to make up worry mind which resident AV you want to keep and uninstall the other. Should you choose to remove Norton, which I think you should, you will find it is almost more difficult to remove than a virus.

Remove Norton pig (resources hog) and use good antivirus protection :wink:
