This awesome theme about virus definition updates

Well, I hate go back to this disgusting theme, but two viruses samples were sent to avast April, 23. I have sent them again. They are recognized as viruses from many other programs, avast doesn’t. No answer, no inclusion in virus definition files, nothing happens. I asked from help to inform my client what danger this virus could propitiate, nothing. So, I am again, forced to appeal to this forum, the only place where it makes a difference.

Viruses submitted need to be added speedily, no question.

In these days when new variants appear daily, it’s no good adding viruses weeks after they’re submitted.

Considering that there’s no universal standard for naming viruses, especially variants, is there any chance it’s already been added to avast’s defs but under a different name? Usually the Alwil team do an excellent job of keeping up to date.

I’m not so sure.
Good work, maybe. Excellent? I don’t think so… there are a lot of improvements expected…

Nope. I always save virus copies in my HD and check them daily to be sure about avast recognition. Nothing happened until 14 Mai, when avast screamed!

This is why multi-layered protection is a must and no longer a choice. The proliferation of malware today is horrible and a single solution cannot be trusted anymore. :frowning: You sacrifice a few more system resources but it’s definitely worth it.

Which is your blend? avast + …

…+ “Kaspersky” on line viruscan (saved me a lot of times)

  • Spybot S&D+ Spyware Doctor Starter Edition

Kaspersky engine is on Active Shield Scan.
Do you know any method to install it for just on-demand scanning without conflicting to avast…
I’m make a desperate tentative in a virtual environment… I’m looking for this engine, at least on-demand…

+AVG Antivirus (I know, you should only have one antivirus but these two play nicely together), Spyware Terminator and CyberHawk.

Only on Vista, never on XP or lower.
Besides this, your resources will be drained by the two residents. In my opinion, the balance of performance and protection is not having both residents.

Actually I’ve experienced quite the opposite. ;D One of the reasons I selected this line-up is because each product, especially AVG and CyberHawk are very light on system resources. In fact, these four programs combined load faster during system boot-up than either Norton 2007 (very slow!) or Webroot SpySweeper with Antivirus. No drain here, just multiple engines adding layers of security to my computer.

By the way a new and improved version of Spyware Terminator was just released. It is significantly lighter on system resources than previous versions. Right now on my computer it is only using 7MB of memory compared to about 25 in previous versions.

I thought Kaspersky online scanner doesn’t clean.

I use BitDefender online scanner. Other than one trojan in my trash bin (BD couldn’t remove it), BD never found anything else. BitDefender online scanner does clean, if it can.

I don’t want to be pessimist but if you have AVG and avast running at the same time in the same computer, both residents… you’ll get trouble sooner or later… starting with email scanning…

As far I know it does not clean… just detect. But you can, after, delete (and clean) by other methods…

Which version do you use? Do you use SpywareT like resident?
Because I’ m experiencing the opposite… Now I’m with 1.9.2.134 (version without Webguard) with resident antispy and H.I.P.S. protection activated, and resources are about 20Mb, while time ago after updating from 1.5.0.740 were more or less 15Mb. (But yes, always have to consider that each sistem is different).
Another question…do you use AVG, SpywareT and Cyberhawk alls with realtime protection?
I ask you about this, because I totally agree the concept of multi-layered protection, but IMHO without risks of conflicts.

That’s ok but I’ll have no trouble there as well. I don’t use Outlook Express or Thunderbird. Just Gmail or Yahoo!

Hello,

I am using ST’s resident as well as the resident protection of AVG, avast! and CyberHawk. However I may decide in the future to just use one antivirus in stead of two, namely avast! only. CyberHawk is a pretty good supplement to antivirus protection.

Yes, you are right, Kaspersky doesn’t clean. Only finds. But clean is a delicious work in DOS or security mode. Searching the line, the file, renaming attributes, (copying a sample to send to avast!), deleting the file. I love this part.

(Something in this life must be done from human, if not, how poor our existence).
