This is Trend Micros detection for the damaged samples of WORM_MYTOB variants

This came in with my download of Avast! What is up with this??

Could it be real? I understand it is damaged and can’t hurt anything but still…

You mean TrendMicro detected malware in avast! installer?
If you downloaded the package from the official webpages, then it certainly must be a false alarm.

 I would certainly hope so! But, having never used Avast! in spite of the accolades I have read, I was both surprised and shocked.

But it sent me on a mission to find out what/how etc.
I spent a lot of time scanning my entire 300+ gigs (including old saved email just for the heckofit) and found a few old baddies to get rid of but nothing alarming.
I am impressed that it found 2 worms in my MailWasher (love it!) before the mail was even downloaded. Think I’ll keep it!

This is the text from the Trend site-maybe it will explain something.

“Description: This is Trend Micros detection for the damaged samples of WORM_MYTOB variants. Most of these samples still contain the majority of their malware code. However, due to some bugs in their self-replicating routine that attaches the worm to the email messages they send out, their file structure is severely damaged, and the starting entry of the file points to the wrong address. Thus, files detected as WORM_MYTOB.DAM can no longer run nor spread.”

It won’t be the first false positive of Trend Micro… every software commites mistakes…

Thanks, I’ll keep that in mind.

I had that problem with Aluria Spyware Eliminator-lots of them before I realized false positives existed.
