This might be a stupid question but...

Hi all, I downloaded the Home version yesterday (got rid of Norton) and I have a question. I looked in the settings and also tried to see if I could find anything in this forum, but couldn’t. My question is, do I have to do a complete scan of my computer each time I turn it on or is there some sort of quick scan that can be done? The complete scan takes about 45 minutes and that’s before I can even get on to my desktop. I don’t like the idea of using ESC but it sure isn’t practical having to boot up the computer an hour before using it. Hope this makes sense.
Thanks

What you are seeing is the boottime scan. It should only run once, when you first installed avast. Have you let it finish at least once?

Yes, I let it finish yesterday after installing. Later on in the day I rebooted and got it again, then again this morning.

Now that was a silly question for me ask. You already said it took 45 min. to complete. ::slight_smile: :-[

Just thought I’d let you know, I rebooted for the fun of it and go figure, it didn’t scan. I hope it stays that way. Also, glad I got rid of Norton, this is so much easier on my system. ::slight_smile: Sorry to posted when my problem seems to have resolved itself.

No problem. I was looking for a thread that dealt with this. If I remember right it was a registry key not clearing. It seems to have done that now.

When you uninstalled norton, did you use the norton removal tool? If not, that may have been part of the problem.

Welcome to the forum!

How to disable scan at boot?

In XP, if you press F8 when starting Windows and select ‘Last known good configuration’ from the boot menu, the boot scan should not be started.

If it is solved now, you’ve learned for the feature.
By the way, are you sure Norton is completely uninstalled?

  1. Remove NAV through Add/Remove programs from Control Panel. Boot.
  2. Use Norton Removal Tool for Windows 2000/XP/Vista.

Thanks for all the support. Yes I’m sure all the Norton is uninstalled. I went to their website and downloaded removal tool after uninstalling and ran it.

Ok. Feel free to come back any time you need help.
