this might be a stupid question... re: firewall

I’ve always used an All in one program for my computer in the past (i.e. Zone Alarm security suite) but wanted to try Avast on the recommendations of a friend, so this may be a stupid question, but since I’m used to one program doing it all for me…

  • does avast provide firewall protection? can i turn my windows firewall off or is that not recommended?
  • avast doesn’t provide spyware protection (real time or otherwise), correct? If that’s the case, what should I use? (preferrably free)

Thanks

Leave the Windows Firewall running (it’s better than nothing). Avast doesn’t have a firewall or targeted antispyware protection (though its database does cover some).

In terms of the best free options, many here are using COMODO or PC-TOOLS firewall.
For free on-access spyware protection, Spyware Terminator stands out while SUPERAntispyware is great for on-demand scanning.
Search the forums for more info/comments on these products.

You can also just keep the Zone Alarm firewall- which is free, and use it with avast!

This might be the better option as you are already familiar with how the firewall works.

Be sure to download and install the basic free version of ZA.

No.

I recommend you use a full firewall (windows one does not protect outbound traffic). I suggest Comodo.

avast has a good spyware detection rate but it’s not an antispyware.
If you want real time protection, try Spyware Terminator (free), otherwise, use the free AVG Antispyware, SUPERantispyware, and/or a-squared.
