I signed up for internet security with avast. The only change I see happening is a notification window pops up that Avast has prevented some dangerous thing from happening, then guides me to a site to click for more information. The “information” is simply an ad to buy more stuff. In addition, I am having trouble with my message sending… the date says “none” and I have to create a fresh new message… I can’t reply. It seemed that avast… not the freebie… I paid for it… was doing just fine before I decided to up the protection. I would try to uninstall it, but I’m afraid I would make things worse. Any suggestions? Judithd

Hummm… Are you talking about real avast or a fake antivirus?
What is the site you’re trying to download from?

I’ve had this happen too - a warning from Avast about how it stopped some malicious something-or-other, then a button to click to get more information. It took me to what looked like an Avast site with some message saying there was no need to panic because Avast caught the problem and if you want more info please pay here (or something like that). I just clicked out of it and didn’t really think much about it other than I wondered why Avast was now using this method to generate paying customers. It never occurred to me that it might be a fake.

So, how does one know the difference between a “real” and “fake” Avast (or any other program for that matter)?

Thanks,
OregonJen

Normally, with an avast! alert there is a link to an avast! Community infor page (yellow text)

This link takes you here

This is a genuine avast! page, in which (obviously) there is a plug for a paid version.

The most informative thing for me there is the graph, which you can click on and see about how many domains have been infected etc.

make sure you downloaded from the real avast!
