Threatfire, Online Armor, Avast Free

Hi, this is my first time using the Avast forums and Avast. I’m fairly positive this is the right section to ask this, but I’m not 100% sure. I downloaded Avast Free just recently and noticed it comes with a Behavioral Shield. Would running Avast’s Behavioral Shield along side of Threatfire result in any conflicts? Could someone describe to me a little how Avast’s Behavioral Shield works (It has not settings like Threatfire does (Being able to control the level of protection)? Is it similar to Threatfire (I assume it is, but I’m unsure). I considered removing Threatfire anyways, because I thought it might be overkill as far as computer security goes, but just in case it’d be nice to know whether or not Avast’s Behavioral Shield and Threatfire conflict.

Additionally, it would be okay to run Avast’s Behavioral Shield along side Online Armor HIPS, correct? I’m not completely sure whether or not a Behavioral Blocker and a HIPS can be ran together without conflict, though, it’s probably overkill.

No, avast does not conflict with Threatfire.
It detects malware behavior (based on internal rules, released into the virus definitions updates).
I’ve used both side by side. Right now, I’ve dropped Threatfire.

avast can be run side by side with OA and its HIPS.

Hi, thanks for the fast response. There’s something else I was wondering that I forgot to ask - what are the recommended specs for running Avast free?

The default
If I were you, I’ll get used to avast before tweaking the settings.
Help files are a good source of what features do.

When I said “computer specs” I meant how much RAM, Hard Disk space etc. Sorry if that wasn’t clear. Also, I just thought of another question. When I disabled some of Avast’s shields an exclamation mark appeared over the tray icon, is there anyway I can disable this? I might find it a little confusing if Avast is warning me constantly about certain shields being turned off when I intentionally disabled them.

System specifications are on the site.
It’s not a problem in the modern machines. avast is also light on resources usage.

For the other problem, configure avast settings > Status bar.

Thanks, sorry I keep forgetting questions I originally intended to ask. For now I have one final question. How many times does Avast free update automatically within a 24 hour period of time?

The minimum intervals currently are like this:

Free AV: 120 minutes ( = 2 hours) (although the default is 240 minutes).
Pro AV, IS: 15 minutes

Okay, thanks. I found where I could change the interval.

I have one last question. You stated the lowest interval Avast free will attempt to automatically update is every 120 minutes, I just successfully changed the interval to every 60 minutes and the change was saved. Will Avast free still update every 120 minutes even if the interval specifies every 60 minutes or can it really be set to less than 120 minutes?

The limit is 120 minutes, hardcoded into avast.
Lower periods are just ignored.

Okay, thanks.

Answered.

Sode no Shirayuki,

Enjoy your new product and welcome to the forum.

If you set it to 120 minutes, it’ll try to update every 2 hours.
If you set it lower, it would ignore the setting and update every 4 hours, which is the default…!!

If you set lower, it will update each 2 hours (not 4).

Sure…? I heard from some users, that it jumped back to the default 240 minutes.
But that was quite a while ago, so maybe it changed since then…!??
Nevertheless, it will be not that important, as also updating every 4 hours will be enough…
There aren’t that many updates per day, anyway…

Well… I’m not sure. Hope someone from Alwil team correct me (or you).

Not me, as I don’t see the importance to test it…!
