Thunderbird, avast, gmail secure connection

I just set up my gmail account in Thunderbird that is suppose to let avast scan the mail per these instructions http://support.avast.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=458&nav=0,1,82. I was just wondering if there was any way to check to make sure that its properly set up because i would hate to have my emails being sent unencrypted.

Thanks

The mail is not sendt encrypted it is the connection that is encrypted, and if you can send and recive and avast! is scanning the mail then it is correct
OBS: Gmail also have virus scanners on there mailserver, using two virus scanners from McAfee and Authentium, so it is already scanned before you recive it

So a) how do I know that avast! is scanning my mail?

and

b) you’re saying I don’t need any security on Thunderbird because it’s already been through Gmail’s security?

Thanks!
