Hello Avast,
I use Thunderbird 17 with a gmail imap account.
receiving: imap.gmail.com with port 143 (SSL)
For sending (SMTP) I use:
smtp.gmail.com port 587 (STARTTLS)
When I want to send email I get an error that the certificate for smtp.gmail.com:587 is not good.
Do you know any solution for this.
Kind regards,
Pondus

is this related to avast?
does it work if you turn off avast mail shield?
if not a avast problem, have you tried Gmail support forum?

Before I had a problem with receiving email and a certificate which was not allright. On this forum I found the solution not too use port 933 but 143. So I thought maybe this forum can help me aswell with this problem.

Avast had some problems interacting with Thunderbird. The solution will be found here:
