Thunderbird problem

Hello all,

I have a daily annoyance that is caused by something conflicting between Avast and Thunderbird.

I’m running Thunderbird v.12.0.1 and Windows XP x64

After a power on or re-boot, the first email I try to send with Thunderbird results in this error message:

An error occurred sending mail: The mail server sent an incorrect greeting: concurrent connection limit in avast! exceeded(pass:0, processes:thunderbird.exe[50]).

The only way around it is to Disable Avast for 10 minutes.

Once I’ve sent 1 email, every other email seems fine. Until I reboot, and then it’s the same problem again.

I have been in this situation for a few months now, assuming that it will resolve with an avast update, but it never does.

I have tried turning off every plugin I have for Thunderbird, but nothing fixed the problem.

I have seen this post:

https://support.avast.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=570

suggesting changing settings, but tend to agree with this thread:

http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=70826.0

in wondering why on earth the problem is happening!

Please help if you can, other wise I will be moving away from Avast. A product that I have used for several years not and that I recommend to everyone!

Thanks
Damian

Hi ,
can you tell to us wich version of avast you’re running?
Is the 7.0.1426 ? Free, Pro or IS?

Are you using thunderbird as a news reader, e.g. do you have a newsgroup account set up ?

I don’t have a newsgroup account setup in thunderbird, but you can I believe set the number of connections to download your newsgroups. If that is set too high then it will exceed the default max connections (50).

Check if the settings for that account has any connections quantity. If so either lower it or increase the max connection limit as in the other topic and knowledge base article.

Hi DavidR,

Thanks for the quick reply!

I’n not using Thunderbird for any newsgroups. I wondered about that being the cause myself and unsubscribed from them all.

I am subscribed to a couple of RSS feeds, but they bring in less than 1 new post every 2 or 3 days.

Any other ideas?

Strange then as I have thunderbird 12.0.1 and avast 7.0.1426 and no problems.

The RSS feeds shouldn’t be using any email/nntp ports (check, I think they would http port 80 or similar), so the only other thing I would suggest is checking your thunderbird settings to see if there is anything relating to multiple concurrent connections.

Sorry I can’t be more practical help as email issues aren’t something I’m too familiar with (not having used thunderbird too long and no problems). You could try the firefox, help, troubleshooting information and see if there is anything obvious relating to the number of connections. Possibly in the Important Modified Preferences section of it (see image example of some of mine).

If that brings up nothing, try the General Help and search for concurrent connections, or something to that effect.
