ThunderBird SMTP/WebShield problem

Starting today, I’m unable to send mail unless I stop WebShield – but have problems only with one SMTP server:

smtpout.secureserver.net (port 80): must stop WebShield
smtp.sbcglobal.yahoo.com (port 25): works fine
mail.pacbell.net (port 25): works fine

Any ideas? (it’s been working for months until today).

While it does not answer what has caused the interruption to your outbound mail it is not a standard use of port 80 (the http port intercepted by Webshield) to run a secure SMTP connection on it.

I notice that the instructions for setting up outgoing mail for smtpout.secureserver.net give you the option of using port 80 or port 3535.

You may find it worthwhile to try port 3535, if that is successful for you it will avoid any potential for conflict with the Webshield.

Changing to port 3535 avoided the problem – thanks.

However, it still seems there’s a problem in Avast (when using port 80) because:

  1. It worked with port 80 in the past.

  2. Pausing WebShield is not enough – it’s necessary to stop it (to work with port 80).

Should I should report this to Avast technical support – or is placing the issue on the forum enough?
