I think I’d asked about this ages ago, and was then told the forum software had no provision to handle it.
Canada and the U.S. (maybe other places too) a couple of years ago changed the dates for Daylight Time so it now runs from March till October instead of April to September. I don’t know what the corresponding change-dates are in Prague, but obviously they’re different from here, since I now have to correct my “local” time (in my profile) 4 times a year, twice each in the spring and fall, to stay current.
I presume you (Vlk, primarily, and others at Alwil) have looked into whether something could be done to auto-detect and auto-adjust when there’s time-zone changes at both ends, on different dates. Did this turn out to be hopeless, or at least not reasonably feasible?
If you fix this please don’t “fix” it for Hawaii as we do NOT observe DST. Avira forum (before the new Burning Board software) used to turn on DST automatically and suddenly my time would be off by one hour and I had to manually change it to another time zone to get my time correct! That was rather ridiculous. I had to do that twice a year and couldn’t use the Hawaii time zone because Avira board thought Hawaii was on DST like most of the Mainland USA is but not all areas of USA mainland go on DST either.
Come to think of it, I have not been on this board during DST I don’t think. So, for all I know, this board does what Avira’s old board software did and will force me to not use Hawaii time here during DST.
EDIT:
UGH! I posted this just now and, sigh, the time is now INCORRECT for Hawaii. The board is showing I posted an hour later than it currently is in Hawaii. So, this board is messed up just like the OLD Avira board software was. You should switch to Burning Board…it is far nicer than Simple Machines (although it currently doesn’t work with Opera) but it does have correct time for Hawaii all year round.
Over at Wilders they use vBulletin, which does quite happily (and properly) make the appropriate changes when it’s time. I don’t know where their servers are located (which, I presume, determines “forum time”), but if P. Wilders is in the Netherlands I’d guess the servers can’t be too far away.
(Edit) @ Mele: Assuming you’re on Windows, check your time-zone setting on your computer, there’s special “zones” for places that don’t use Daylight Time, such as (if it’s still the case there) eastern Indiana. I just looked and there’s one for Hawaii – plus (possibly only if the selected zone does observe Daylight time) there’s the option to untick that “automatically adjust …” box.
IMHO I think the best solution is like Wilders/vBulletin, as some other boards, the board time is alwaysGMT, then the users enter their time zone in their profile.
that’s true.
there’s only a time offset function. i admit thats not that easy 2 handle, if not in the same political time zone. means outside europe/eu. since most european contries change their time in the same night…
so, forum’s time is gmt - but u cant enter your timezone. hope 4 all outside europe, that changes will b made 2 this function.
With regard to the user’s local time … in my profile, if I click the auto-detect link in the time zone section and save the change, it’s then correct (reads date/time/zone settings right off my computer, maybe?). Unfortunately I have to do this again each time the time changes here or at the forum, which as I’d previously noted is 4 times a year because of the date differences.
The vB over at Wilders, whatever it uses for forum time (GMT?), does include an option to auto-adjust for Standard/Daylight changes, which it does properly for changes at either end. So I’ve never had to touch my time-zone settings there.
