After getting a nasty (coolwebsearch variant) with Norton which CWSShredder took care of (I think, although my registry had to edited manually, thank goodness for Hijack This) when I finally did find it (a whole other story, which I won’t bore you with) I did some research and here I am…a new Avast (Home) user. It loaded and seems to working just fine.
As a newbie to using Avast, I was going through the options for customizing the program and was wondering what all you experts would recommend I change from the default settings.
I have a AMD 1200+ processor, SP1 (I just don’t like to download Microsoft updates like SP2 until they have been around for awhile…paranoid I guess) use Zone Alarm free version (yes I have checked my port security and all is well), have Ad-aware (with plug ins), Spybot, Spyware Blaster and Spyward Guard loaded. I have AVG, Pest Patrol (I know about the false positives) as backups along with a couple of others I downloaded when I was looking for CWS. I also use the usual online scans. After the infestation, I have become safety girl and run scans like crazy. I also use Mozilla as my browser unless I’m downloading something that Mozilla won’t support. Have Opera and Netscape as my alternates but don’t like them as well.
Any suggestions for Avast, or anything else for that matter?
BTW, what a great forum you have here! Another reason I chose Avast.
Yup, it’s a typo…AVG is not loaded or running. I read all the instructions and hints before I downloaded Avast. I find a bit of reading saves a lot of time later.
I have to say you are really on top of everything here!
Actually, it’s Alwil that’s on top of everything.
I just read a post about two new varients of a virus which was discovered late yesterday while the audio part of the Avst! update notified me that another update had just been made. I’d call that service with a smile and I was the one smiling.
The settings in Avast! really depend a lot on the user. The more stingent the settings are, the more time consuming they become. (To a certain extent.)
The default settings are pretty much middle of the road. On my system, it’s set to scan every thing. I really don’t have any problems with those settings and feel more secure that way.
