To save the village we had to burn it down...

Okay, new problem.

I’m operating two systems as I gradually move files and applications across.

Drawing in Word 2010 for old time’s sake (hooked up to a much bigger monitor) when the program goes to autosave and suddenly I get the ding-ding-ding on my old laptop along with a warning that I have some ‘roaming’ application which Avast just killed before it could be saved.

It has -never- done this before.

I call up Avast TS and get the same old spiel with the exception that the lady involved takes a look under the hood as it were (assumes control and runs windows msinfo32) and tells me that if I don’t get rid of Windows Defender and Security Essentials and something called ‘GUT’ my machine is going to implode because I effectively have no updates going on and Avast is not protecting my machine.

Which I find strange because the Avast daily updater app ding-ding-dings with a successful download alert /as she is talking to me/ that says it has just downloaded the latest cures.

After I tell her maybe, when I get paid next, she can have my money, but only if she explains why Avast suddenly started treating my Word 2010 as a malware app an hour ago, she says: “Because your Windows has accumulated so many critical errors from these AV overlaps it just can’t take it anymore.” Well. Than sounds…technical. Inquiring a little further gets me “Windows tells Avast where it’s hurting…” or words to that effect.

Sigh. If Windows is sick in the head and Avast is the shrink with the get well drugs but it only administers the happy juice when Windows admits it needs help…

Shaking head.

I go to my Avast status page and it says everything is green (it’s now running a Scan, just to be sure).

I have stripped out Google Chrome and Windows Security. I can’t find Defender in the list of programs on the Control Panel.

Since the lady’s suggestion was to completely strip out and reinstall Avast, is that my next step (Doctor, doctor, are /you/ insane?)?

Kinda hesitant here on investing a bunch of money when I don’t think the Avast TS people are in it to win it so much as get a payday.

Any advice welcome.

My program is not triggering the delete/infection message when I press the blue disk hotbutton for saving files. Only in the autosave.

Does that mean it’s picking it out of a .tmp file or is the main file still infected? Do I dare transfer the files, if I scan them before opening?

Have a fun Saturday Night everyone.

Please us the search option before posting as many things you are talking about already have been talked about/explained.

No, you didn't. It doesn't excist. It is a third party that you called.

Only if you are using a old version of avast. It has been removed in the 2015 version.
