Too much cache memory after scanning (win 10)

Fresh installed Win 10. There are no programs installed except for Free Avast.
I noticed too much cache memory in Task Manager. To be precise it was about 15gb (I have 16gb in all). So the whole not used memory was cached.
At first I thought it caused by Microsoft Edge, but then I remembered that I used Avast scanning for a test. I restarted my PC, ran Avast to scan a disk and cache memory started to fill up totally. Then I restarted it again and tried to run Smart Screen, well, it took only 10gb of caсhe memory but it seems still too much.

Is it normal?

Else, for example it makes youtube videos crashed because of no memory for a browser I guess. So I wouldn’t want to restart my PC every time after scanning.
Please test it for yourself whether your Avast uses memory the same way?

Yes, Windows Defender is disabled.

Windows will use as much RAM as possible which is why you have it… As data gets old or programmes are closed the cache empties. If you run some RAM intensive programmes then the cached RAM will be moved to virtual memory

But, windows uses as much RAM as possible as it is faster than virtual memory on the hard drive

Hello Martin,

just to make clear what user talking about: it’s good enought that windows using free RAM to boost some processes, but this case looking like a bug for me, when scan was finished avast should free up cached memory but it’s not.

Thank you for your time! As I can see you have 4 Gb of RAM, and only half of it is free, that’s why we can’t see any big difference before and after scan. User kesss has 16 GB of RAM and it’ll be interesting how much RAM chached before runining avast scan. Let’s wait for him

Aye but you must bear in mind that since windows 7 MS has tried to get windows to use as much RAM as possible as disc swapping to a virtual drive is slow and creates bottlenecks
So the ideal would be to have nearly all RAM in use

So even if that cached memory doesn’t empty and stays we should not worry about that?

No need to worry as windows will empty the cache if it needs the RAM for current tasks

Having the cache though means that a programme sitting in the background for a few hours will still run straight away when needed
