when i start avast… a screen comes up and says: scan complete with error 42000 = unknown error… then it jams up and nothing happens… what do i do next?
Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?
i cannot remember if i i had AVG on here or not…if i did, a technitian would have removed it…

Run it 
i ran the avg removal tool… and restarted the computer… no change in the error or the ability to get avasti to scan…
Umm uninstalling the current avast! and installing the latest version of avast! is an option^^
Maybe this could be the cure for ur problem^^

I suggest an installation from the scratch:
- Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
- Boot.
- Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall and use it for complete uninstallation. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode (F8 while booting) and doing it from there.
- Boot.
- Install again the latest avast! version.
- Boot.
- Check and post the results.
thank you so very much… the reinstallation did the trick… when i opened aswclear… that program completely cleared avasti and i did not have click anything else… somehow when i went to avast to download a fresh software, i was moved to a page wanting me to download cyber defender…which i did, thinking it might be a new and changed version of avasti… i finally decided i was wrong and deleted it… and went back to avasti and down loaded the avasti software without incident…thank you again… glen emery
