Today it suddenly decided that a DLL in a piece of legitimate software was a virus (almost certainly a false positive),
what virusname did avast give the file? What program did it belong to?

Sometimes file cant be quarantied, it may delete if not able to quarantine.

I did not realize that Avast deletes suspected files it cannot quarantine…in some sense I can see why but I also can see how dangerous this would be.
To the OP…you could use a util to “undelete” the file…there are tons of them.
I’m not recommending but these two are listed in top of these type utils
