I’ve replaced my main PC with a new one. Both are running Win XP, SP3. The old machine ran Avast Pro, with a licence until 2012; I’ll downgrade that to the free version. I’ve installed Avast Pro on the new machine, and it’s running fine with the demo licence - but typing in my licence number, it come up as invalid. Anyone know why that might be? Is there anything I need to do to take the licence off the old machine?
I would suggest you download the latest avast 5.0 pro version, seems pointless to do this with 4.8 pro.
Download avast! 5 Pro - try this direct link - http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_pro_eng.exe 39.9MB save it to your hard disk, transfer by USB to your new system.
The old avast 4.8 pro license won’t work with 5.0 pro, you need to convert it.
avast! 5 Pro license convert from 4.8 Pro license. Try http://www.avast.com/resend-license.php now, fill in the form giving your email and 4.8 Pro License key and they will send the new license file to you (presumably it will check you have a legit 4.8 Pro license first).
You must however, do as you suggested only run one pro version for the one pro license, but it doesn’t matter which.
Thanks for your replies and advice. Upgrading to 5.0 seems a big step, as the extra functionality duplicates things I already have in place, and am familiar with. I’m too busy at present to learn how to configure a new firewall, etc.
For anyone having the same problem, I realised my mistake. I copied the licence code from my old installation, which was 19 digits. When I found the original code as I received it, it’s those 19 digits, hyphen, followed by a further 8 digits. When I entered the full string it was valid. It took me a while to find the original code as I was searching for emails with Avast in the address - but it was actually from element5.com
Glad that you have the license issue finally sorted.
You will be surprised how quickly you will get used to avast 5.0 as the UI is much easier to navigate and find what it is you are looking for, much more user friendly. As has been mentioned the Pro version doesn’t include a firewall so you will have all the functionality of the 4.8 pro version and only a couple of extra things for your enhanced protection.
Much of this is the same as 4.8 in that if left on the default settings provides the best compromise between protection and performance. You would certainly take much less time to get used to 5.0 than you did 4.8 pro.
