Tray Icon gone?

Hello all,

I am having a problem with the avast tray icon…I can’t find it.
I thought it was not run by the startup, but when i checked ‘msconfig’, it was checked. But there is no icon. Still, when checking the running processes in Task Manager, i can read manya ‘ash—’ services running, but no icon.

I tried checking the setting for ‘Show tray icon’ and check the ‘Animate’ button, but to no avail.

Well, it’s actually running…but i can’t find the tray icon.
I would be really grateful if anyone could help me out with this.

Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).

If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again / update to beta?

Hi rassel,
Thanks for responding…
I did the ‘repair’ thing, and it works…great

I should have been aware of it earlier. Thanks for telling me, though.

Btw, what ‘update to beta’ do you mean? I don’t find any new avast beta version on the website.
Could you give me the link if you do have it with you?

your welcome ;D and this is the latest beta vision http://files.avast.com/files/beta/aswbeta.exe (just download it and install) or go here http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=33621.0 for more information.

Hi rassel,

thanks again…nice to know you in this forum.

He he ;D nice to meet you too. If you have any problem again just ask.

I’ve just become an Avast user and had a similar problem. My cure was reboot and never close the On-Access Protection Control window with the RED X, only click OK.
Thanks for the forum, will be looking in often until I get the hang of this product

Welcome to the forums, Skywarrior.

Yes, please come back often, learn more, and maybe help others.

Is the reboot always done repeatedly? or was it only once and then the problem is cleared?

Does anyone know how, in the first place, this problem (tray icon gone) occurred to some computers like mine, or Skywarrior’s? cause I’ve been using Avast quite a while till this problem happened.

Is depend on what problem you having. Or check Avast setting-Appearance

Ok, thanks…rassel

welcome again.

In detail, if the icon on system tray was gone…

  1. Check the option in the Appearance tab of settings.
    or
  2. Repair your avast installation through Control Panel.
    or
  3. Make a link to ashdisp.exe in your startup folder
    or
  4. Add the path to ashDisp.exe into a value named avast! in the Windows Registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
    See picture here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=26155.msg213891#msg213891

If that does not help, please, uninstall, boot, install again, boot.

What other security based software do you have that might block new startup entries, e.g. Spybot S&D (TeaTimer), AdAware (AdWatch), SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor (StartUpGuard), PrevX, WinPatrol, ProcessGuard, etc.?

Hi Tech,

I am having no more problem with the tray icon for my avast at the moment thanks to rassel.

I did the ‘repair’ thing in Control Panel, which is similar to your second option if the tray icon is gone.
I was just wondering what could make the tray icon be gone.

I run SpywareDoctor (startupGuard) and SpyBot S&D (but not the TeaTimer). In fact, I have been running them for a while before the tray icon was lost…and I personally don’t think that it was caused by any of them.

Windows Defender?
Or any other in the list above…

Nope, I don’t use Windows Defender and any others in the list above.
I only have SpywareDoctor, Avast!, and windows firewall…none others.

Maybe it is just removing the startup item of avast…

Yeah?
I guess so. Thank you, anyway.

Sorry, work week you know.
No I only had to reboot the one time and quit clicking the red x to close. Now always click the OK button
