Trojan detection

Avast did not detect a number of trojans, including the common comm.exe virus.
I am using the latest updates and set scan to thouough and logging level to ‘warning’.

Is Avast free edition equipped to detect Trojans?

Denis

If you not getting a virus warning that and you believe it is a new or undetected virus, then if you can zip and password protect (‘virus’, will do) the suspect file and send it to virus @ avast.com (no spaces).

Give a brief outline of the problem, the fact that you believe it to be a new or undetected virus and include the password in the body of the email. Some info on the avast version and VPS number (see about avast {right click avast icon}) will also help.

You could also check the offending/suspect file at: Jotti - Multi engine on-line virus scanner if any other scanners here detect them it is less likely to be a false positive. You can’t do this with the file in the chest, you will need to move it out.
Or VirusTotal - Multi engine on-line virus scanner

Yes avast does detect trojans.

Aye blacktusk,

Can’t you let us in on the names of this trojans, very interesting to know what they are/were.
From the virus info on the common.com exe,
link: http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/Print98104.htm you can conclude that you are a wee bit behind with your patches. One golden rule in security land is always update, and always patch. At the bottom of the update and patch site, it should read: “HASTE YE BACK, YE YOUNG LAIRDS”

Some security people have a daily job doing this. Furthermore never use your full rights as you surf the Net, and you do not run the risk of nasty drive-by infections.See here;

comm.exe is a filename, not the name of malware.
What is the malware name?

Hi Eddy,

If this is a file infecting virus, this file can be infected too. File infecting viruses do these things.

polonus

They might well do those things but they too are given a virus/malware name not the originating file name as that can change yet the malware payload remains the same.
So it should have the malware name that was gave on detection I doubt that it was given the same virus name as the file name.

A search for comm.exe (not common.exe) shows several giving it the virus/malware name Troj/Bdoor-IP.

The important thing here is not to worry unduly about a name but to ensure avast get a copy of it as I suggested in reply #1 two days ago.
