Trojan.win32.sirefef Redirect problem

Hello, I have a redirect malware that keeps redirecting me whenever I try to open a link on google for example. I’ve had this problem for nearly a month now, and I have tried scanning my computer with all the antivirus/malwares out there, including malwarebytes, spybot, and more. The only antimalware that detected anything was Ad-Aware, and the infected files seem to be in: “C:\Windows\assembly”. The detected virus was called “Trojan.win32.sirefef” earlier on but is now called “Trojan.win32.Generic!BT”. Perhaps it’s just a variant.

If I understood correctly, ComboFix seems to have fixed this problem for some but the directions to use it seemed to be specific to each different problem so I didn’t want to risk using it without asking for professional help.

I attached the logs. I’m new at this so I really hope I did it right.

I really don’t want to go to reformatting my pc…
Thank you very much for your assistance, any help is very much appreciated!

PS: sorry if this is a repost, I’m new here and wasn’t sure where to post.
I think it is the exact problem as with this post: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=89719.0

If it was Trojan.win32.Generic!BT, MBAM should have detected and removed it.

Best to wait from assistance from Essexboy which probably won’t happen till tommorrow.

You definitely have a lot of nasty stuff in those logs; host file trashed, consrv.dll infected, etc.

Thank you for your quick answer DonZ63.

I see, don’t know why it didn’t find it… I’m really surprised it’s such a mess, I’m actually very careful as to the sites I go to, the files I download…
I attached the other logs to my first post. I’ll wait for Essexboy’s assistance then.

Thanks again.

Help anyone please?

Don’t know why Essexboy did not respond. Do you have Avast installed? I did not see reference to it in the ComboFix log. This forum is for Avast users.

If you need immediate help, you can try the folks over at Bleeping Computer: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com

Hello DonZ63, thanks again for your quick reply.

As a matter of fact, I don’t. I happened to stumble upon the post I mentioned earlier while I was desperately looking for a way to solve my problem. And since that person seemed to have been able to solve his problem, I thought I’d ask here even if I wasn’t an Avast user.

Sorry for that, I didn’t think twice before I posted.

Will Avast be able to fix the problem?

I will try my luck at Bleeping Computer.
Thank you once again for your help!

Hi there, only just seen this thread

You have a zero access variant so lets kill it

Download and Install Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here

[*]Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
[*]Accept the disclaimer and allow to update if it asks

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/ried7/NSIS_disclaimer_ENG.png

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/ried7/NSIS_extraction.png

[*]When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
[*]Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

  1. Do not mouse-click Combofix’s window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
  2. Do not “re-run” Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
  3. If after the reboot you get errors about programmes being marked for deletion then reboot, that will cure it.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

Hello Essexboy, thank you for your reply.

I followed your instructions and attached the ComboFix log.

Here is my computer’s current status:
The redirects completely stopped. What a relief, I can’t thank you enough!
However, I have a problem with my Windows Firewall and Windows Update services, I can’t seem to turn them on. Windows Update worked perfectly fine until today, and Firewall was not working ever since I had this redirecting problem so I thought they were linked.

Thank you so much for your help!

For the windows updates problem run the MSFixit from here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058

For the firewall try this fixit http://support.microsoft.com/mats/windows_firewall_diagnostic/en-us

Could you now also run a fresh OTL scan for me please so that I can check for residue

The Fixits worked perfect, thanks.

I attached the new logs.

May I ask how all of this happened to my computer? I actually thought I was a careful user…

Thanks again for the help!

It probably came from an infected web page or a socially engineered facebook type popup

No AV can protect against this as they change on a daily basis

OK lets sweep for orphans now before I send you on your way

Please download Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
[*]Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
[*]If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
[*]Once the program has loaded, select “Perform Quick Scan”, then click Scan.
[*]The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
[*]When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
[*]Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
[]When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
[
]The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
[*]Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Ah I see.

[]Follow the prompts on the screen
[
]A message should appear confirming that ComboFix was uninstalled

.
Run OTL and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.
.
We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that

[*]Click Start.
[*]Open My Computer.
[*]Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
[*]Select the View Tab.
[*]Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
[]Click Yes to confirm.
