hello, just wondering if anyone could help me out, and let me know what a win 32: trojan - gen is. I’ve just been reading about trojans, and honestly, feeling a bit lost. i did the scan and put it in the chest. thought i’d go and see the computer guy tomorrow, but if i can fix it myself (with your help :-*) that would be better. hope you can help.
Well, I’d suggest to not go see a computer guy, there are plenty of them here for free!
I can’t really put into words exactly what that virus is, but Avast classifies it as so. That’s just what Avast (the company) has decided to name that particular type of virus.
If you would like to know what other A/V companies have called it, you can upload the file to http://www.virustotal.com
Follow the following directions that I have obtained from one of DavidR’s posts:
You could also check the offending/suspect file at: VirusTotal - Multi engine on-line virus scanner and report the findings here the URL in the Address bar of the VT results page. You can't do this with the file securely in the chest, you need to extract it to a temporary (not original) location first, see below.Create a folder called Suspect in the C:\ drive, e.g. C:\Suspect. Now exclude that folder in the Standard Shield, Customize, Advanced, Add, type (or copy and paste) C:\Suspect* That will stop the standard shield scanning any file you put in that folder. You should now be able to export any file in the chest to this folder and upload it to VirusTotal without avast alerting.

What is the infected file name, where was it found e.g. (C:\windows\system32\infected-file-name.xxx) ?
Check the avast! Log Viewer (right click the avast ‘a’ icon), Warning section, this contains information on all avast detections. C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashLogV.exe
The avast Win32:Trojan-gen is generic signature (the -gen at the end of the malware name), so that is trying to catch multiple variants of the same type of malware and is a fine balance between detecting a new variant and detecting something valid as infected.
So there is no specific trojan description.
Save your money you don’t need a computer guy, the chest is a protected area where the file can do no harm. With the information asked for we can be more detailed in our help.
