Trojans

Last week I ran Avast and it detected 72 Trojans. I ran it again today and it detected 154. Why is it not warning me when these Trojans try to get into my computer? I have windows xp home edition and Avast is set to run the entire time the computer is on.
Thanks a lot.

Well maybe because the trojans got on your computer before they were added to the avast! virus database

Hello Pat,

I think you are without a firewall. Install one, else you catch Trojans like a bird catches worms. Install some good anti Trojan program too: a-squared for instance is free. Update your system, update your browser or install a safer browser like Firefox 1.05 or Opera and install a good hosts file, so you cannot connect to sites where Trojans or Trojan script reside.
Everyone who wants to surf safe nowadays needs a list of security software nowadays, and a brains to first think and then click. A lot of free software comes with a lot of crap in a bundle, and then it is not so free anymore. P2P can be a guaranteed success in acquiring all sorts of malware,

  • What OS are you using? is it up to date?
  • What avast! version and VPS file (virus database) number, e.g. 0436-4 (see about avast!)
  • What actions have you taken to try and resolve the problem?

Tell us what providers you have enabled (especially if web shield is enabled)?
Because if avast can detect it when it is on your hdd, then in theory the web shield provider should be able to detect it and stop it from being downloaded.

If as others have said you don’t have a firewall you are potentially fighting a losing battle.

If you haven’t already got this software (freeware), download, install, update and run it.
