Trouble installing avast internet security

I’m hoping there isn’t already a thread about this.

I’ve been using the free version of avast for a few years now, with no problems or complaints at all. A few days ago I decide to format my computer and start from scratch. I get everything reinstalled, and decide to get the paid version of avast. So I download it, and it asks for the license key, which I thought I wasn’t supposed to download that file until after it was installed. Anyway, I choose the free option, it installs and asks me to reboot. I do so, and get the blue screen of death.

Had to format all over again. I try it again thinking it was just a random fluke, nope. Happens yet again.

Has ANYONE had any problems like this?? This is the first time I’ve ever had any trouble with avast.

I look forward to hearing any help and advice.

I’m running XP home and firefox.

Which is the BSOD number (error number)?
When you say “I get everything reinstalled”, what is everything here? Just Windows?

haha sorry. Yea just windows, all the drivers, firefox, everything except avast.

Did you update your SP before installing Avast! after reformat? Best guess.

edit: btw, your email is showing public on the forum

Good call, I didn’t even think about that. I have service pack 2 on here now, so I might try it again.

As for the installing part though, should I just choose the free option, or download the license key file before installation and try to put that in?

You have to install before activation. You can use a Avast! Free, or a free trial of paid version before pulling the trigger on a purchase. Either way, if you choose a paid version, you just insert the license file into the Avast! UI that comes via email after the financial business is done. That will either activate the trial for the duration of the license, or upgrade Avast! free to your paid version of choice. Since you are having problems, I would take the trial for a spin, myself.

Got it working. Thanks for the help guys.
