Hi, all - long-time user of Avast with a question I don’t see answered yet anywhere on this forum so maybe someone out there knows.
I have two laptop computers that I try to keep updated. Both are running Vista - one is 32-bit and one is 64-bit but I don’t think that’s relevant here. Both are running Avast - laptop “A” has recently upgraded to Avast 6.0 and has all the latest virus database updates. On laptop “B”, I just upgraded to Avast 5.0 because I already had the installer downloaded.
The problem is that I do not have regular access to a high-speed Internet connection, only dial-up. Downloading 30-40 MB of installer, either for the latest version of Avast or the latest vps updates, takes hours over a dial-up connection - hours that I do not have. I took advantage of temporary access to a high-speed connection to upgrade laptop A to the latest Avast and vps update, which is why it’s running Avast 6.0. Stupidly, I did not download the vpsupd.exe file while I had this access, and I do not have this access anymore for updating laptop B.
What I’d like to do is to copy the latest vps files (NOT the vpsupd.exe file, which I do not have) from laptop A to laptop B, so that laptop B will have the most recent updates without having to download them over dial-up. But I cannot seem to make this work - the new files I’ve copied onto laptop B simply aren’t recognized.
How can I perform this sort of truly manual update by copying vps/vpx/other files directly from one computer to another? I don’t mind editing .ini files or other configuration files by hand if necessary, but I don’t want to screw it up by doing it wrong either. I’m fairly knowledgeable about computers in general, so I don’t mind a “techie” answer.
Thanks in advance to anyone with a credible answer.
